Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera Idomeneo will be broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera on March 25, 2017 at 35 cinemas across Poland.
Mozart was commissioned to write the opera in 1780 by Karl Theodor (elector of Bavaria). Its Italian libretto was adapted by Giambattista Varesco from a French text by Antoine Danchet. The work was premiered on January 29, 1781 at the Cuvilliés Theatre in Munich. Like many stories from Greek myth, it explores the motivations and emotions of humans whose fates seem beyond their own control. These issues are presented within the framework of the opera seria genre.
The Metropolitan Opera’s 2016-17 season, the 50th anniversary of its home at Lincoln Center, features 225 opera performances of 26 operas in a varied repertory that ranges from 18th century masterpieces to one of the most acclaimed operas in recent years. The Met: Live in HD series, which transmits Met performances to more than 2,000 movie theaters in 70 countries around the world, continues for its 11th season and includes the broadcast of 10 performances from the season.
