Warsaw | Summer Concerts at Grochowska Street

The cycle "Summer concerts at Grochowska Street" will be inaugurated on May 25 and 26, 2019 at 4.00 p.m. in the headquarters of the Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra (272 Grochowska Street).

The afternoon chamber concerts will take place every weekend, featuring both renowned artists and rising stars of classical music. During the 30 thematically divided concerts – Not only orchestra, Japan, Moniuszko, Relax, On travel, Improvisation, Old Warsaw – we will have a chance to listen to ensembles of differnet types, such as a reed quintet with saxophone and bass clarinet, a cello octet or a flute quartet. The programme will include music of many styles and eras – from Baroque, through Romanticism, to jazz, contemporary and improvised music.

On May 25th, the "Not only orchestra" concert will feature Serenade in C minor KV 388 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Octet in E flat major Op. 103 by Ludwig van Beethoven performed by the Sinatonia Varsovia Wind Ocetet. The next day, we will listen to the Sinfonia Varsovia Academy String Orchestra under the baton of the excellent violinist Jakub Haufa. The musicians will present works by Edvard Grieg, Franz Schubert, Edward Elgar and Krzysztof Penderecki, the artistic director of the Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra.

Warsaw | New Music Scene: The Music of Trance

Another concert of the series "New Music Scene", organized by the Witold Lutosławski Society, will take place on May 25, 2019 at 7.00 p.m. at Nowy Teatr in Warsaw. Chain Ensemble will perform work by Simeon ten Holt and Witold Lutosławski.

Palimpsest for string septet (4 violins, viola, cello and double bass) by Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (1923–2012), composed in the early 1990s, is music for the lovers of pleasant sounds, where traditional tonality and obsessive minimalistic trance are arranged in 11 parts. Witold Lutosławski's Silesian melodies date back to Stalinist times, when tonality was a very political subject...

Warszawa | "Curtis on tour" Special Concert at FCUM

A special concert entitled  "Curtis on tour" will take place on May 25, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. in the concert hall of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music (2 Okólnik Street).

The unique event will take place as part of the annual concert tour "Curtis on Tour". This is the first concert of musicians from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music from Philadelphia (USA) at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music. The Curtis Institute of Music is one of the most prestigious music universities in the world alongside the excellent Juilliard School of Music in New York. Musicians from Poland played a significant role in the establishment and development of the university over its almost century-long history – Józef Hofmann was the first rector of the institute, and among the professors there were several Polish pedagogues.

The concert will be performed by a piano quartet composed of: prof. Roberto Díaz (viola) – President of the Curtis Institute of Music, and its students – Claire Bourg (violin), Sydney Lee (cello), Daniel Hsu (piano). The programme will include Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 15 by Gabriel Fauré and Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25 by Johannes Brahms.

The initiator and organizer of the "Curtis on Tour" visit in Warsaw is Ms. Elżbieta Sozańska from Philadelphia – a patron of music, a long-time director and vice-president of international pharmaceutical concerns, as well as a writer and playwright. Both the concert and the master classes run by the president of the university, prof. Robert Díaz, will be held with the financial support of the Kon-Sozański Family Foundation to commemorate Berta Zofia Kon, graduate of the FCUM in 1920.

Katowice | Silesian String Quartet and AUKSO at NOSPR

On May 25, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra of the city of Tychy and the Silesian Quartet will perform at the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall in Katowice. The concert will premiere Eugeniusz Knapik's 2nd String Quartet.

The programme of the concert performed by NOSPR's guests will featured works by British composer Edward Elgar, German artist Werner Egek and Eugeniusz Knapik – professor at the Academy of Music in Katowice.

AUKSO under the direction of Marek Mos will present the Islands for string orchestra by Eugeniusz Knapik, commissioned in 1983 by Musica Viva Australia and the Adelaide Festival. It is a one-part composition with two linking fragments of the form symbolizing two states of matter, namely: water (sea) and earth (island). The work was inpired by an image of an observer on the ship, looking out for land on the horizon and should be understood metaphorically. In the second part of the evening, one of the leading Polish chamber ensembles – the Silesian Quartet – will premiere Eugeniusz Knapik's String Quartet No. 2.

Lublin | Lublin Youth Spring

On May 24-26, 2019, the Lublin Philharmonic invites you to a series of concerts under the common name of "Lublin Youth Spring".

The project aims to discover, promote and integrate young music talents. It will gather students from the music schools of the Lublin Province and from Wrocław (Youth Chamber Orchestra of the Chevalier de Saint-George). As part of the project, on the initiative of the General Director of the Lublin Philharmonic Orchestra Wojciech Rodek, the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Lublin Philharmonic will be created – a novelty in the musical environment of the region.

The concerts' repertoire is extremely rich. We will be able to listen to the works of such masters as: Bellini, Haydn, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Moniuszko, Mozart, Rachmaninow, Szostakowicz, Wieniawski and others, performed not only by instrumentalists but also by vocalists. The project will be inaugurated by a concert of music school students, featuring a Small concert for piano and instrumental group by Romuald Twardowski. The final concert will include a Melody by Ignacy Jan Paderewski.

Warsaw | Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra and sensational conductor

The Jerzy Semkow Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra invites you to the Royal Castle in Warsaw on May 24, 2019 at 7.00 p.m. The musicians will perform under the baton of Anna Duczmal-Mróz, who was hailed as a "sensational conductor" by the German press.

The programme of the concert will be composed of 20th-century Polish music as well as works by Gustav Holst and Dmitry Shostakovich. Sinfonia Iuventus under the baton of Anna Duczmal-Mróz will perform a splendid four-part Serenade, Op. 2 for string orchestra by Mieczysław Karłowicz and Orawa by Wojciech Kilar, a composer's tribute to the beloved mountains and musical folklore of Podhale. The programme will also include Gustav Holst'sSt Paul’s Suite,Op.29, No. 2, and Dmitri Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony, Op. 110a.

Grzybowski MaciejZ Maciejem Grzybowskim, wybitnym polskim pianistą, dyrektorem artystycznym 4. Festiwalu „TRZY-CZTE-RY. Konteksty. Kontrasty. Konfrontacje”, który odbędzie się w Studiu Koncertowym Polskiego Radia im. Witolda Lutosławskiego w dniach 28 maja 2019 – 19 czerwca 2019, rozmawiała Katarzyna Hushta.

KATARZYNA HUSHTA: Konteksty różnych epok, kontrasty w doborze środków, inspirujący się nawzajem artyści. To wszystko tworzy wyjątkowy klimat warszawskiego Festiwalu „Trzy, Czte - Ry ”. Czy mógłby Pan zdradzić szczegóły programu tegorocznej 4 edycji Festiwalu?

MACIEJ GRZYBOWSKI: Z okazji minionej 7 lutego dwudziestej piątej rocznicy śmierci Witolda Lutosławskiego proponujemy wysłuchanie kilku jego dzieł, m.in. Livre pour orchestre, Koncertu podwójnego, Pięciu pieśni do słów Kazimiery Iłłakiewiczówny. Jeden z koncertów poświęcamy obchodzącemu w tym roku osiemdziesiąte urodziny Szábolcsowi Esztényi'emu. Mistrz będzie improwizował wraz z zaproszonymi przez niego muzykami. Wystąpią też Marcin Zdunik z Szymonem Nehringiem.

Do czego Pan zachęca słuchaczy, układając taki właśnie program Festiwalu?

Do obcowania z pięknem. Cała reszta to refleksja słuchacza. Chcę ją jedynie pobudzić. Właśnie poprzez piękno. Staram się odnajdywać mniej czy bardziej ukryte dialogi między artefaktami nierzadko od siebie odległymi. Nie tylko czasowo. Zdarza się przecież, że dzieła powstające w tym samym roku więcej dzieli niż łączy, a kompozytorzy z tego samego pokolenia reprezentują diametralnie odmienną estetykę i stylistykę. Porównajmy choćby Gustava Mahlera i Richarda Straussa, a zwłaszcza Arnolda Schönberga i Sergieja Rachmaninowa. Twórcze może być też zderzenie ze sobą kompozycji na zasadzie kontrastu, gdzie na tle danej retoryki odmienna od niej tym wyraziściej nam się komunikuje. Bywa, że w takiej konfrontacji tkwi kontekst, który może nieść ze sobą więcej niż racjonalny dialog.

Warsaw | 15th Kwartesencja Festival

On June 12 – July 2, 2019 the Witold Lutoslawski Polish Radio Concert Studio and the New Theater in Warsaw will host the 15th edition of the Kwatesencja Festival.

A year ago the Royal String Quartet celebrated their 20th anniversary. In 2019 it’s time for the 15th Kwartesencja festival, which this year will host four concerts. The ensemble will take part in all of them, together with their guests, Polish top level artists: one of the most outstanding Polish singers, winner of the 2018 European Composers Award – Agata Zubel, and pianist – originally jazz musician, pushing all genre boundaries – Marcin Masecki.

The programme includes classical string quartets by Beethoven and Schubert, sophisticated compositions by James MacMillan and minimalist meditation by Morton Feldman. Moreover, composer and vocalist Agata Zubel will perform Sonette der Elisabeth Barrett-Browning by Egon Wellesz, written to the love poems of the famous English poet of Victorian times, as well as Songs of a Traveling Journeyman by Gustav Mahler, reflecting the composer's alter ego, as he was called a "romantic wanderer" by Bohdan Pociej.

Opole | Silesian String Quartet and Polish Music

On May 24, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. the Józef Elsner Opole Philharmonic will host a concert of Polish contemporary music performed by the Silesian Quartet.

The Silesian Quartet is one of the leading Polish chamber ensembles. The ensemble’s musicians have honed their craft in master classes led by members of such quartets as LaSalle, Amadeus, Juilliard, Smetana, Alban Berg and others. The Quartet’s repertoire consists of over 400 chamber pieces, with around 300 of them representing works from the musical canon of the 20th and 21st-centuries. The chamber musicians of Silesia have premiered over 100 string quartets by Polish and foreign composers, with a significant number of works dedicated to them. They were nominated to the "Fryderyk" award 24 times, winning six statuettes.

During the May concert in Opole, the ensemble will performe String Quartet No. 4 by Grażyna Bacewicz, String Quartet No. 2 "Quasi una Fantasia" by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and the works of Grzegorz Ciechowski (Republic band) arranged for string quartet.
