Piotr Beczała in the "Adriana Lecouvreur" MET broadcast on January 12

Met

Francesco Cilèi's Adriana Lecouvreur in a new staging by Sir David McVicar will be broadcast from The Metropolitan Opera to cinemas on January 12, 2019. The main roles will be performed by Piotr Beczała and Anna Netrebko. The Warsaw Cinema Praha invites you to broadcast at 6.35 p.m.

Adriana Lecouvreur occupies a unique place in the repertory: largely dismissed by experts from its premiere in 1902 to the present day yet cherished by its fans for the dramatic possibilities provided by the lead roles. The opera is a deft combination of frank emotionalism and flowing lyricism, with pseudo-historical spectacle. Based on a play by Eugène Scribe, the story was inspired by the real-life intrigues of famed actress Adrienne Lecouvreur and the legendary soldier—and lover—Maurice of Saxony. Cilea's operatic retelling quickly became a favorite of charismatic soloists. The title character in particular is a quintessential diva role.

The score of Adriana Lecouvreur relies on elegance and a deft weaving of themes rather than symphonic grandeur. There are nods to a neo-Rococo style, especially in Act III’s dance sequences, but generally the score serves to showcase the singers. Lyricism abounds in the solos, particularly in the tenor’s “La dolcissima effigie” in Act I and Adriana’s Act I aria “Io son l’umile ancella,” whose arching line and theme of the singer as “the humble handmaiden of the creative genius” have made it a soprano anthem of sorts.

Wrocław | Scottish Fantasy

NFM

The National Forum of Music Wrocław Philharmonic invites you to a unique musical trip to Scotland on January 11, 2019 at 7.00 p.m. The programme of the concert will include two works inspired by the beauty of this country, whose authors are German composers – Max Bruch and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

This time we will go to Scotland through ... Moldova. It will be due to the opening Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes by Mieczysław Weinberg – a "rediscovered" Polish-Jewish composer. In his artistic output, this work appears as a rather light piece, being a charming picture of Moldovan and Balkan folklore. In this amazingly captivating music, we can also hear a klezmer dance tune that reminds of the composer's roots. Rhapsody was written during Weinberg's stay in Russia and improved the composer's position on the Moscow music scene. Among the performers of the work was Dawid Oistrakh, who presented his interpretation during a concert in Moscow in 1953.

Among the "Scottish" works that will be presented during the concert, we will find Scottish Fantasy by Max Bruch, written in 1880 for the legendary Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate, and Symphony No. 3 by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, inspired by the composer's first visit in Scotland in 1829. The NFM Orchestra will perform under the baton of Gabriel Chmura. The outstanding Russian virtuoso Boris Belkin, lecturer at the Conservatorium Maastricht, will perform as a soloist.

Warsaw | New Year's Concert

SI

On the 12th of January 2019, at the Witold Lutosławski Polish Radio Concert Studio in Warsaw, the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra under the baton of Antoni Wit will give a concert featuring the talented American violinist Angela Wee. Pieces by Stanisław Moniuszko, Pablo de Sarasate and Manuel de Falla will be included in the programme.

Young violinist Angela Wee from the US won many competitions, including the second place at the 12th Pablo de Sarasate International Violin Competition (Spain) in 2015. A particularly promising part of the concert is her interpretation of the brilliant virtuoso works by this Spanish violin master – his two fantasies on the motifs of Gounod’s Faust and Bizet’s Carmen, and the popular Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs). The hot Iberian sun will be also present in the music from Manuel de Falla’s ballet The Three-Cornered Hat, based on a humorous story about an insidious mayor and a cunning miller’s wife, set in the scenery of an Andalusian town. The programme will also include one of Moniuszko’s less known, but very interesting works, Overture to Pariah.

Bydgoszcz | Brazilian... not only in Paris

FP

On January 11, 2019 at 7.00 p.m., the I. J. Paderewski Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz will host a concert "Brazilian ... not only in Paris".

Carnival is an exceptionally good time for the operetta, a genre of light opera – in terms both of music and subject matter. In the past, the word "operetta" simply meant a one-act opera. It was not until the success of Orpheus in the Underworld by Offenbach in Paris in 1858 that this genre was sanctioned as an art form. Pleasant, often humorous operetta subjects are eagerly undertaken by major baton masters, like maestro José Maria Florêncio.

The concert will begin with the Overture to the famous Orpheus in the Underground, followed by the work inspired by the Offenbach's operetta, written by the contemporary Polish composer Maciej Małecki. His music is strongly embedded in the twentieth-century tradition and can be described in terms of neoclassicism, constructivism, and colourism. The evening will end with fragments from the operetta Candide by Leonard Bernstein – outstanding conductor, pianist and American composer whose 100th birthday anniversary was celebrated last year. Ewelina Osowska (coloratura soprano) and Jacek Laszczkowski (tenor) will perform as soloists.

Warsaw | Sinfonia Varsovia Chamber Music

SV

In the new year, the second edition of the Sinfonia Varsovia Chamber Music cycle returns under the motto "From duet to octet". The first concert will take place on January 9, 2019 at 7.00 p.m. in the Orchestra's residence at 272 Grochowska Street.

The first edition of Sinfonia Varsovia Chamber Music was focused on Polish music of the last 100 years. This year's edition, however, leads listeners through gradually growing ensembles, starting from two and ending with eight performers. The programmes of seven individual concerts will feature Polish music, classical chamber repertoire, as well as many less known compositions and original arrangements.

The series will start with a concert of three duets formed from various combinations of bass clarinet, bassoon and piano. The programme will include Basson Sonata in G major, Op. 168 by Camille Saint-Saëns in transcription for bass clarinet and piano and Lied by François Rasse for the same set of instruments, as well as Sonata in B flat major for bassoon and cello KV 292 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arranged for bassoon and bass clarinet and Concertino by Marcel Bitsch for bassoon and piano. The musicians of Sinofnia Varsovia, Karol Sikora (bass clarinet) and Szymon Michalik (bassoon) will be joined by pianists Wioletta Fluda and Romana Orłowska.

All those who want to learn more about the performed works will be able to meet the musicians and talk about the music they have listened to after the concerts. Admission free!
