Premiere of a new opera by Zygmunt Krauze

Olimpia z GdańskaThe premiere performance of Zygmunt Krauze’s opera Olympia of Gdańsk (based on libretto by Krystyna and Blaise de Obaldia) will take place on November 20, 2015 in the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk. The production was directed by Jerzy Lach and supervised by Maja Metelska.

The composition, the text of which is written in Polish and French, tells a story of a Polish dramatist Stanisława Przybyszewska. The protagonist’s real life blends with an imaginary world, in which she identifies herself with the legendary Olympe de Gouges - political activist of the French Revolution and author of the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen.
Olympia of Gdańsk is an opera that falls outside traditional theatre narration. A real world where Stanisława lives and creates blends with a literary world that is traced to a novel being written by her. These worlds are inhabited by people who, regardless of time, present or past, have the same relationships. One might say that as time flows we repeat the same stories and situations”– said Jerzy Lach, the production’s director.

Performers: Jan Monowid (Robespierre), Anna Mikołajczyk (Stanisława), Monika Ledzion (Olympia), Stanisław Kierner (Stanisław), Przemysław Baiński (Saint Just), Mateusz Teliński (Duke Philippe), Dariusz Górski (Marquis de Pompignan), Marzena Ostryńska (Simone), Marcin Miloch (Abel), Witalij Wydra (Officer), Joanna Wesołowska (Amédine), Magdalena Nanowska (Zélina) and the Choir and Orchestra of the Baltic Opera conducted by Maja Metelska.

The opera will be staged also on November 21 and 22, 2015.
