Warsaw | Open lecture “Warsaw Autumn – new musical perspective for the countries under the Iron Curtain (on the example of Georgian composition school)”

Nana Sharikadze

The Department of Musicology of the PAN Institute of Art cordially invites you to the open lecture by Professor Nana Sharikadze from the State Conservatory of Music in Tbilisi, which will take place on May 28, 2019 (Tuesday) at 11:00 a.m. in the Sobieski Hall at the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Art.

Cultural policy of the Soviet Union played an essential role in musical life of Soviet Georgia. The country's politically driven culture often defined the relation between national music and global musical processes. This situation was evident in the 60's, when Georgian music underwent radical changes, both in terms of style and musical language. Festival "Warsaw Autumn", as a musical expression of a thaw in politics, encouraged Georgian composers to experiment and incorporate new ideas. Thus, the lecture will discuss the following issues: the Georgian compositional school before the thaw, the "Warsaw Autumn" as the emodiment of modernism for Soviet compositional schools, a possibility to revive the lost connection with the West, and the means of influence.

Professor Nana Sharikadze's research is focused on 20th-century musical avant-garde, musical theatre, music in totalitarian regimes, and American music. She has introduced a new MA course devoted to “20th Century Musical Theatre” at TSC. Her projects have been supported by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst DAAD (2012) and Georgian President's Scholarship (2002-2004). She has published in such journals as GESJ "Musicology and Culturology", Bulletin of the Georgian Academy of Science, or Bulletin of Tbilisi Conservatoire. She is a member of the Georgian Composers' and Musicologists' Union.
