Warsaw | WarszeMuzik 2019

WarszeMuzik

Next edition of the WarszeMuzik festival – a series of chamber concerts in preserved pre-war courtyards in the Warsaw ghetto area – will take place between 10 August and 1 September 2019.

This year concerts will take place at 41 Chłodna Street and next to the Umschlagplatz monument at Stawki Street. There will also be a walking tour through the Wola district entitled "In the footsteps of Weinberg" lead by Warsaw activist Aleksandra Stefaniak.

During the inaugural concert, Hashtag Ensemble will present improvisations to photographic scores consisting of archival photographs from the collections of the Jewish Historical Institute. On 11 August, pianists Tymoteusz Bies and Piotr Sałajczyk will perfrom works by Mieczysław Weinberg, Franz Schubert, Dmitrij Szostakowicz and Władysław Szpilman. On 17 and 18 August, Marek Bracha – pianist and curator of the festival, will perform a recital composed of mazurkas written by Polish composers of Jewish origin: Maria Szymanowska, Józef Wieniawski, Aleksander Tansman, Mieczysław Weinberg and Władysław Szpilman.

The world premiere of the Concerto for flute, piano and strings (2019) by Mikołaj Majkusiak will take place on 24 August. The work inspired by the compositional style of Mieczysław Weinberg, containing a quote from his 21st Symphony "Kaddish", is dedicated to the curators of WarszeMuzik. One more premiere will be featured in the final concert: A piece for tenement house, 4 gramophones and chamber ensemble by Agnieszka Stulgińska, composer-in-residence at WarszeMuzik 2019. The work will be performed by Hashtag Ensemble, residents of the house at 41 Chłodna Street and activists. The performance is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund under the "Composing Commissions" programme, implemented by the Institute of Music and Dance.
