Following several years of tradition, the Academy of Music in Łódź will celebrate the beginning of the New Year with a concert co-organised by the Łódź Scientific Society. The event will be broadcast online on Saturday, 16 January 2021 at 6.00 p.m. on the YouTube channel of the Academy of Music in Łódź.
The concert broadcast live from the Academy's Concert Hall will be performed by the Symphony Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Łódź under the baton of Jacek Rogala. The concert programme will include Krzysztof Penderecki's Ciaccona in memoria Giovanni Paolo II per archi. The piece dedicated to the memory of the Polish Pope was included by the composer in his monumental Polish Requiem. The completed work was first performed on 17 September 2005 in Wrocław during the Wratislavia Cantans festival by the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra Katowice under the direction of the composer himself.
During the New Year's concert we will also hear orchestral works of Viennese classics: Symphony No. 16 in C major KV 128 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Cello Concerto in C major Hob. VII B: 1 by Joseph Haydn. The solo part will be performed by Michał Balas – a cello student of prof. Stanisław Firlej.
