The online premiere of Rafał Zapała's first opera Solastalgia will be held on 11 September 2021 at 9.00 p.m. on the VOD platform of the Stanisław Moniuszko Grand Theatre in Poznań.
Solastalgia – a concept coined by the Australian philosopher Glenn Albrecht. It describes a complex of mental and physical ailments, depression and anxiety disorders caused by environmental change, the feeling of helplessness in the face of the perceived changes and being overwhelmed by global media narratives. It is a state of homesickness that is felt even when we are physically at home. It is only a matter of time before we feel like a refugee at home. Technological utopias of the end of the 20th century turned into dystopias. We experience the "melting" of key and stable concepts such as: human, life, consciousness, nature, culture, art, we experience a crisis of democracy, a crisis of faith, including faith in science. Human civilization has found itself in a state of uncertainty. We dive, dissolve, and perhaps even drown in the ocean of information.
The composer Rafał Zapała found the main inspiration for his work in the most original concept of Stanisław Lem – a conscious aquatic life, an intelligent ocean – Solaris, or Sola (ri) stalgia. His experimental opera was written as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme carried out by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
