Kraków | World Premiere of Wojciech Widłak's Piece for International Music Day

FKThe world premiere of Wojciech Widłak's One Day Symphony. In memoriam K.K. Baczyński will take place on 1 October 2021 at 7.30 p.m. at the Krakow Philharmonic and will be repeated on 2 October at 6.00 p.m. The work was created as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme carried out by the National Institute of Music and Dance and will be performed for the first time on the International Music Day by the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Paweł Kotla.

Wojciech Widłak, rector of the Academy of Music in Krakow, received this commission from the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Kraków in the 2020/2021 season. As the composer himself states, "it is not a traditional symphony, but rather a symphonic fresco – a story about a young man in love who, despite the tragic circumstances, has kept his tiny world of private, intimate emotions, his micro-happiness. (...) The piece symbolically represents the eternal clash of brutality and dissonance with gentleness and harmony – not only in relation to the protagonist and his time, as – both earlier and today – the world is situated at the antipodes of drama and happiness." The composer dedicated his work to the memory of Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński, whose poetry affects the emotional overtone of the music, and is also recited directly by the musicians of the orchestra.

The concert programme will also include Darius Milhaud's ballet-pantomime Le Bœuf sur le toit and Maurice Ravel's Bolero.
