Warsaw | Peter and the Wolf – a Concert for Children’s Day

POSI

On 1 June 2019 at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m., all children age 7 and up and their parents are warmly invited to the Royal Castle in Warsaw to attend the Jerzy Semkow Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra performance of Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf op. 67.

The protagonist of the work is the valiant pioneer Peter, who succeeds in capturing the wolf himself (despite the warnings of his grouchy grandfather) and takes him to the zoo in a joyful parade. The work written in 1936 still sparkles with grace, wit and melodic beauty and imparts a carefully concealed lesson – an ingenious presentation of individual instruments to young listeners (and ‘guiding motives’) corresponding to the heroes of the story. In the original score, the flute is assigned to the bird, the oboe to the duck, the clarinet to the cat and the bassoon to the grandfather, while the horns signal the part of the wolf and the strings of Peter. The hunters who want to catch the wolf are represented by percussion.

During the June concert dedicated especially to young audiences, the role of the narrator will be played by Paweł Królikowski, a popular film, TV, theatre and dubbing actor, as well as television producer and president of the Association of Polish Stage Artists. The arrangement will feature a quintet of woodwind and brass instruments.

Under the baton of Thomas Kalb, the Elbląg chamber musicians will perform Franz Schubert's String Quartet No. 12 in C minor D 703, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's String Symphony No. 12 in G minor, Edvard Grieg's String Quartet No. 1 in G minor Op. 27, and Canzona di barocco for string orchestra by Henryk Czyż.

Lublin | Moniuszko and French music

Fonie

On 9 June 2019 at 6pm, the Association of Polish Musicians invites you to the Crown Tribunal in Lublin for a concert "Moniuszko and French music" as part of the concert series "Fonie Lublina".

Probably every music lover knows what value had Moniuszko's music to Poles in the days of positivism. Due to the use national motifs, attachment to national traditions as well as satirical and comedic sense, Moniuszko's works became a representation of the national belonging to the opressed nation. A slightly different approach to opera was presented at that time in France – a country that was undoubtedly the capital of European culture in the second half of the 19th century. It was there that the most prestigious opera performances were produced, attracting musicians from all over the world.

During the concert "Moniuszko and French music", Stanisław Moniuszko's works will be confronted with the works of French composers of the second half of the nineteenth century. The clash of different ways of perceiving music – Moniuszko's focused on national themes and the French composers' focused on the cosmopolitan values, the power of art and creating new trends – is reflected in the programme of the upcoming concert. Apart from Moniuszko's arias (also in the violin transcriptions), we will listen to the works by Georges Bizet, Charles Gounod and Cesar Franck.

POSI

The concert "Sinfonia Iuventus for Independence" on 22 June 2019 at 7pm in the Witold Lutosławski Polish Radio Concert Studio in Warsaw, devoted entirely to Polish music of the twentieth and twenty-first century, will showcase outstanding cellist Tomasz Strahl.

This highly appreciated soloist, chamber musician and academic teacher has won many prestigious awards and distinctions and is one of the most esteemed cellists of his generation. The two cello concertos featured in the programme are the perfect way to show off the versatility of this artist’s talent in a single evening.

The work by Stanisław Moryta from 1992 is saturated with dramatic, elegiac expression, as expressed in the character of each movement: Drammatico / Lugubre / Aggresivo; it also displays cello virtuosity. Cello Concerto No. 2 by Piotr Moss titled Prières (Prayers) was composed in 2003 and premiered in Poland, performed by Tomasz Strahl of the NPRSO in 2005.

The programme is supplemented by two overtures – the first opened the now forgotten opera Maria by Roman Statkowski (1904), acknowledge when it premiered to be one of the best Polish works of its kind since the days of Moniuszko. The interwar period will be represented in the programme by the Overture for orchestra by Antoni Szałowski, one of the many Polish students of the famous Nadia Boulanger (interestingly, two generations before the young Piotr Moss also studied with her near the end of her long career), in tribute to neoclassical style – which is also present in this brilliant piece.
