Warsaw | Maestro Jerzy Semkow in memoriam

SemkowA concert in Memory of Maestro Jerzy Semkow, founder and parton of the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra, will take place on 2 November 2019 at 6 p.m. at the Warsaw Philharmonic. The concert will premiere Paweł Łukaszewski's Corpus Christi Responsoria, dedicated to the memory of the Master.

Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra has always been grateful and proud that it was Maestro Jerzy Semkow who founded it in 2007 and whose name the orchestra has borne since 2018. Together with the Warsaw Philharmonic (and with the participation of its outstanding choir), where the world-famous conductor performed a number of times and was always greeted with great enthusiasm, the Sinfonia Iuventus will celebrate the 5th anniversary of Jerzy Semkow’s death with a performance of the all-time masterpiece – Mozart’s Requiem and the first performance of Paweł Łukaszewski’s Corpus Christi Responsoria dedicated to the memory of Maestro Semkow. The concert will be hosted by Bartosz Michałowski, choir manager.

Paweł Łukaszewski is, as a composer, interested in a variety of musical genres. It is, however, religious – particularly choral – music that he composes most eagerly. His pieces are valued not only by Polish audience and artists, but also outside Poland. Paweł Łukaszewski’s a cappella pieces often sound incredibly spectacular (owing to the composer’s excellent knowledge of choral practices and broad experience in singing and choirmastery), are also full of contrasts and suggestive expression. A characteristic feature of his music is exceptional harmonic sensitivity: a creative dialogue with the tradition of ancient modality, and major-minor tonality, which he himself defines as “renewed tonality”. Paweł Łukaszewski’s music is always very challenging for choirs. Its most brilliant performances always make an unforgettable impression on the audience.

11. edycja Festiwalu Era Schaeffera

eraW warszawskim Basenie Artystycznym, 24 października 2019 roku odbyła się 11. edycja Festiwalu Era Schaeffera "The Eternal Carousel", podczas którego została przybliżona postać i dorobek twórczy genialnego polskiego kompozytora Bogusława Schaeffera.

Odtwórcami postaci schaefferowskich dramatów byli znani polscy aktorzy, m.in.: Jan Peszek, Mikołaj i Andrzej Grabowscy, Jan Frycz, Jan Machulski czy Marek Frąckowiak.

Patronat medialny nad Festiwalem objęło Polskie Centrum Informacji Muzycznej POLMIC.

Katowice | New Music Orchestra / Old Masters

OMN

A concert entitled "Old Masters" will take place on 27 October 2019 at 6 p.m. in the chamber hall of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. The New Music Orchestra conducted by Szymon Bywalec – the oldest Polish ensemble specializing in contemporary music performance – will present the works of masters and precursors of the most famous currents in contemporary music.

The program will include Capriccio for piano and orchestra by Igor Stravinsky – with the participation of the soloist Gabriela Szendzielorz-Jungiewicz, Chamber concert for 13 instruments by György Ligeti, and Chain I for chamber orchestra by Witold Lutosławski.

Witold Lutosławski's composition was premiered at the "Warsaw Autumn" festival in 1984. The composer himself wrote about his work as follows: "The title Chain 1 suggests both the form used in this work and the intention of composing more 'Chains' in the future. In a work composed in chain-form the music is devided in two strands. Particular sections do not begin at the same moment in each strand, nor do they end together. In other words, in the middle of a section in one strand a new section begins in the other. In Chain I the principle of chain-form serves to conceruct the greater part of the piece. Toward the end the texture becomes more complex and consists of several individual parts played ad libitum which form a network of melodies to be played cantabile. I have composed Chain 1 for the fourteen principal players of the London Sinfonietta as a souvenir of our common music-making".

Katowice | NOSPR / Jerzy Maksymiuk / Janusz Olejniczak

NOSPR

On Sunday, 27 October 2019 at 12 p.m. the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice will host a concert with the participation of Janusz Olejniczak on the 170th anniversary of the death of Fryderyk Chopin.

The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra will perform under the baton of Jerzy Maksymiuk. The programme will include: Ignacy Jan Paderewski – Nocturne in B flat major (instr. Jerzy Maksymiuk), Fryderyk Chopin – Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21, Sergei Prokofiev – Symphony No. 1 in D major 'Classical', Op. 25. The concert will be hosted by Marcin Majchrowski.

Youthful songs are often written out of love. Paderewski composed the Nocturne in B flat major for the beautiful, several years older pianist Raluce Bibesco-Bassaraba, Princess Brancovan, with whom he allegedly had a fiery romance. In the orchestral version, this melancholic miniature's resemblance to the central part of Chopin's Second Piano Concerto will become clear. Iwaszkiewicz once wrote that the first entrance of the piano in Larghetto "sounds like opening a gate to a sanctuary of love and peace." Indeed, the composer confided in Tytus Woyciechowski that when writing this song, he thought about his affection for the singer Konstancja Gładkowska, who six months after Chopin's departure from the country ceased to correspond with him. Prokofiev created his symphony at the idyllic dacha near Petrograd, without access to the piano, away from the hustle and bustle of the war and revolution, away from his first love Nina Mieszczerska, with whom he recently broke off the engagement – after a row with her father who did not intend to give up his daughter to the artist with no fixed income. He composed a concise, condensed pastiche of an eighteenth-century symphony in the style of Haydn. Love often fails composers – each of them, however, transforms emotions into music differently.

The concert is held under the patronage of the PWM Edition as part of the TUTTI.pl project promoting the performances of Polish music.

Gdańsk | 8th "NeoArte – Synthesizer of Arts"

NeoArte

The 8th "NeoArte – Synthesizer of Arts" – international festival presenting the most interesting trends in contemporary music and art – will be held in Gdańsk on 23-26 October 2019.

The originator of the festival that focuses on the synthesis of arts is the Tri-City ensemble NeoQuartet, winner of the Pomeranian Artistic Award of 2019. Contemporary composers create works combining video art and theater, visual artists create sound installations, theater and dance are moving towards performative art. It is becoming increasingly difficult to set boundaries between various fields of creativity, and it is becoming easier to combine them.

This year's festival will last five days, featuring nine concerts, two artistic installations, a radio play and several performances. Composition students will have the opportunity to take part in composer workshops led by the festival's patron Gwyn Pritchard, as well as performance workshops presented by Alwynne Pritchard. Children and youth will be able to participate in electronic music creation classes led by Krzysztof Topolski. Each concert is planned as a multidisciplinary performance, which makes the audience paricipate in the artistic process.

In the Gdańsk garrison, the audience will participate and co-create the premiere of the latest project of the Krakow artist Piotr Peszat – Into the Heart of Hearts (2019) for acoustic and electric string quartet, live-electronics and live-video. The finale of the festival, "NeoArte Night" in the New Synagogue, is a challenge for both the audience and performers – the 12-hour concert marathon will premiere latest works by contemporary Polish composers written for piano and string chamber orchestra.
