The State Philharmonic in Szczecin was established on 15 December 1953 at the National City Council building, mainly thanks to the efforts of the then manager, Janusz Cegiełła. In 1957 the institution was named after Mieczysław Karłowicz, a prominent composer who lived at the turn of the century. The new hall of the Philharmonic, designed by the Catalan architectural studio Barozzi/Veiga, was erected in 2014 in the place where the pre-war Konzerthaus used to be – at the intersection of Małopolska and Matejki streets. This architecturally beautiful building, awarded many times in prestigious architectural competitions, became an impulse for the institution's dynamic artistic development.

The list of soloists who guest-starred with the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra includes such names as: Krystian Zimerman, Rafał Blechacz, Emmanuel Ax, Halina Czerny-Stefańska, Lidia Grychtołówna, Witold Małcużyński, Piotr Paleczny, Ewa Pobłocka, Adam Makowicz, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Kaja Danczowska, Bartłomiej Nizioł, Stefania Toczyska, Ewa Podleś, Urszula Kryger, Wiesław Ochman, Andrzej Hiolski, Edward Auer, Zakhar Bron, Eugen Indjic, Kevin Kenner, Natalia Gutman, Maurizio Pollini, Ivan Monighetti, Gábor Boldoczki, Tabea Zimmermann, Christian Tetzlaff, Francesco Tristano, Terence Blanchard and Matthew Herbert. The conductor’s podium has been occupied by such great artists as: Witold Rowicki, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Antoni Wit, Krzysztof Penderecki, Tomasz Bugaj, Jerzy Katlewicz, Marek Pijarowski, Tadeusz Strugała, Karol Teutsch, Andrzej Markowski, Kazimierz Kord, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Eugene Tzigane, Łukasz Borowicz, José Luis Gomez and Ainārs Rubikis.

The concert hall is home to the Symphony Orchestra and chamber music ensembles: Éxquartet, Accord-Strings Ensemble, Szczecin Philharmonic Big Band, West Side Sinfonietta, ArteOn Guitar Quintet, Duo Con Fuoco, Karłowicz Quartet, FeelHarmony Quintet, High Five Brass.
