composer, music theorist and teacher; b. 1st June 1909 in Warsaw; d. 18th April 2006 in Warsaw. In the years 1928-33 she studied music theory under Kazimierz Sikorski at the State Conservatory of Music in Warsaw. In 1936-37 she completed individual studies in sound engineering at the BBC and Decca record labels in London.

From 1933 she worked as a music teacher. In 1945-66 she taught music theory at the State Higher School of Music in Kraków, where in 1950-61 she was the dean of the Department of Composition, Theory of Music and Conducting, and in 1961-66 the head of the Chair of Ear Training. In 1966 she started working at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw, where she obtained the title of professor in 1967. She taught ear training and counterpoint until 1981, from 1976 as a retired professor.

She was a winner of numerous composition competitions. In 1955 she received the 2nd prize for String Quartet No. 1 (1954) at the Polish Composers' Union Competition, in 1959 –the 1st prize for Missa in honorem S. Vincenti for mixed choir (male and boys' voices) with woodwind instruments (or organ) (1958) at the Missionary Priests Competition in Warsaw, in 1968 – an honourable mention for Meetings – Recontress for organ (1968) at the competition organized by the Szczecin Music Society in Kamień Pomorski.

Maria Dziewulska was the author or co-author of methodological publications in the field of ear training: Ear training methodology (PWM, Krakow 1948), Ear training materials, together with Aleksander Frączkiewicz and Krystyna Palowska (PWM, Krakow 1963, 1980 – 6th edition).

She received the Prime Minister Award for works for children (1956), the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1964) and the 1st and 2nd degree Award of the Minister of Culture and Arts (1965, 1971) for special achievements in the field of didactics and pedagogy.

From 1952 she was a member of the Polish Composers' Union.
