Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar,
composer and music teacher, b. 5th September 1924 in Lwów (Lvov); d. 27th September 2008 in Kraków (Cracow). In 1950-55 she studied composition with Stanisław Wiechowicz and piano with Jan Hoffman at the State Higher School of Music in Cracow. She is a professor of composition at Cracow’s Music Academy, where in 1987-93 she also held the post of rector.She has won numerous competitions for composers. In 1954, she received an honorable mention in the Young Composers' Competition of the Polish Composers' Union for her Oberek from the Suite of Polish Dances for piano (1954). She was twice awarded honorable mentions in the International Competition for Women Composers in Mannheim - in 1961 for Hexaèdre for orchestra (1960) and again in 1966 for Exodus for symphony orchestra and tape (1964). In 1962 she won 1st prize and the Gold Medal in the International Competition for Women Composers in Buenos Aires for Muzyka na smyczki [Music for strings] (1962). In 1966 she received the 3rd prize in the A. Malawski Competition for Variazioni concertanti for flute and chamber orchestra (1966). In 1974 she was awarded 2nd prize in the Karol Szymanowski Competition for her musical poem Madonny polskie [Polish Madonnas] for mixed choir and symphony orchestra (1974).
For her entire oeuvre and for her extensive cultural activity, Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar has been honored: five times with the Minister of Culture and Arts Awards; the City of Cracow Award (1970), Gold Cross of Merit (1975), the Prime Minister's Award for works for children and young people (1977), the Award of the Polish Composers' Union (1988), The Distinction for Contributions to National Culture (1989), and, for her 75th birthday and the 45th anniversary of artistic work, the Cavalier’s (1983), Officer’s (1993) and Commander's (1999) Crosses of the Polonia Restituta Order (this last order was granted for her 75th birthday and 45th anniversary of artistic work), and the Honorary Award of the Polish Culture Foundation (2003).
