Ewa Dahlig-Turek,

ethnomusicologist; b. 21st July 1958 in Warsaw. In 1977-82 she studied at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Warsaw, receiving a degree with honours for a thesis on folk techniques of playing fiddle (on the example of the Kielce region), written under the supervision of Prof. Anna Czekanowska-Kuklińska. In 1990 she obtained a PhD (her research, conducted under Prof. Ludwik Bielawski, had focused on fiddle-type folk instruments used in Poland), followed by a habilitation obtained for a research on "Polish rhythms" in the music of 16th-19th centuries. Since 1982 she has been working at the Music History Department of the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). In 2003-2007 she was Deputy Director for General Affairs, and in 2007 she was appointed Deputy Director for Research.

She has been awarded a British Council scholarship (1993), British Academy scholarship (1996), and has spent 6 months as a trainee at the Universität-Hochschule Essen (1992-93).

She is a member of the editorial board of Muzyka (Music) quarterly, peer reviewer for the Australian Research Council, Israel Science Foundation, and Foundation for Polish Science. She is also a member of the Standing Committee for the Humanities within the European Science Foundation, deputy chair of the Polish Association of Research Managers and Administrations (since 2005). She has been chair of the PAN/European Association of Research Managers and Administrators liaison group, general secretary of the European Seminar in Ethnomusicology, and chair of the Polish national committee within the International Council for Traditional Music. She has participated in nearly 50 conferences abroad and more than a dozen in Poland, and has been a guest lecturer in Sweden and Norway.

Her ethnomusicological research focuses in particular on Polish folk tradition against a wider European context. She investigates folk practice of violin playing in Poland and studies historical transformations of folk string instruments. She also concentrates on electronic databases and computer-aided rhythm analysis (especially related to the rhythm of Polish folk and historical dances). Lately, she has also been studying the so-called "Polish dances" in Scandinavia.

In 2014 she was awarded the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
