Zbigniew Przerembski,
ethnomusicologist; b. 3rd February 1952 in Szczecin. He graduated from the University of Warsaw (Institute of Musicology). In 1979 he completed a MA thesis titled Preferencje muzyczne górali podhalańskich (Musical Preferences of the Highlanders of Podhale) under the supervision of Professor Anna Czekanowska. In 1979-80 he was a programming consultant at the Warsaw Philharmonic. Since 1981 he has been working at the Department of Musicology of the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). As the Institute's research fellow he wrote a PhD thesis titled Style i formy melodyczne polskich pieśni ludowych (Styles and melodic forms of Polish folk songs) under Professor Ludwik Bielawski (1991) and a habilitation thesis titled Dudy w dawnej Polsce (Bagpipes in Old-time Poland) (2006). Since 2006 Zbigniew Przerembski has also been working at the University of Wrocław, currently heading the Section of Systematic Musicology of the Department of Musicology. His research focuses on Polish and European folk music and the history of traditional music, in particular the analysis, classification and typology of styles and forms, musical instruments, and performative practice. He published 5 books and over 200 texts on the subject. He is also a member of the editorial team working on the series Polska pieśń i muzyka ludowa. Źródła i materiały (Polish Folk Song and Music. Sources and Materials) published by the Institute of Art PAN (Kaszuby, Warmia i Mazury, Podlasie, Wielkopolska).
He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Folk Artists’ Association, Musicologists’ Section of the Polish Composers’ Union, International Council for Traditional Music (Canberra, Australia), International Biographical Centre in Cambridge (England) and the American Biographical Institute in Raleigh (North Carolina, USA). He also sits on juries of many folk festivals.
