Piotr Paweł Koprowski,

composer and theorist; b. 24th August 1947 in Łódź. In the years 1966-69 he studied composition with Bolesław Woytowicz at the State Higher School of Music in Kraków, where he obtained a master's degree. In 1969-1971 he continued his studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger.

In 1971 he emigrated to Canada. Between 1971 and 1977 he studied at the University of Toronto, obtaining a doctorate in music theory and composition. In Toronto, his tutor was the legendary composer and teacher, the first Canadian dodecaphonist, John Weinzweig. In 1971-73 Koprowski taught music theory and composition at the Toronto University, and in 1973-74 at the McGill University in Montreal. Between 1974 and 2017 he lectured as a professor at the Department of Music (Department of Music Research and Composition) of the University of Western Ontario. In 1988-89 he was a composer-in-residence with the Canadian Opera Company, which resulted in the one-act opera Dulcitius, staged in May 1989.

Koprowski has won a number of prestigious awards, including the Interdiscyplinary Victor M. Lynch-Stanton Award (1989), the Jean A. Chalmers National Music Award for four nominated orchestral works – Viola Concerto, Symphony of Nordic Tales, Saga, and Ancestral Voices (1997), the Jules Léger Prize for Sonnet for Laura (1989) and for Woodwind Quintet (1994). His works are included in the repertoire of almost all Canadian orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, as well as prominent ensembles and soloists such as the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet and the flutist Peter Oien.

In 2002 the recording of his Viola Concerto (CMCD 5206) received "Juno" nomination. In 2004 he wrote Behind the Iron Curtain on commission from the Winnipeg International New Music and conductor Andrzej Borejko. His Elegia for a Polish Youth received its US premiere in 2006 in New York (Carnegie Hall). In 2005 the President of the Republic of Poland awarded the composer with the order of Polonia Restituta.
