Maja Metelska,

conductor and cellist; b. 28th June 1983 in Warsaw. Graduate of Master Degree studies in Symphonic and Opera Conducting with Prof. Antoni Wit (2006), Master Degree studies in Cello with Prof. Andrzej Zielinski (2008), and Doctorate studies in Conducting (2008), all at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland. She studied here also Chamber Music with Prof. Jerzy Marchwinski, Prof. Barbara Halska, Prof. Maciej Paderewski, Prof. Marek Szwarc and at the Chamber Institute of Music in Seattle, USA with the Philadelphia String Quartet. She has studied conducting on international master courses with Jorma Panula, Yuri Simonov, Bruno Weil, Antoni Wit and at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen, USA with David Zinman, Marin Alsop, James Conlon and James de Preist. She has participated also in cello master courses with Carter Enyeart (USA), Stanislaw Firlej, Andrzej Orkisz, Claus Reichardt (Austria) and Tomasz Strahl.

Since 2007 she holds the position of assistant conductor at the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. During the season 2007-2008 she has cooperated as assistant conductor with the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic in Bialystok. In the years of 2006-2008 she has worked as assistant conductor and conductor of the Szymanowski State Music Schools Symphony Orchestra in Warsaw. She has conducted concerts with Polish philharmonic orchestras including the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra, Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra, Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra, Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra, Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra, Lower Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra, Zielona Gora Philharmonic Orchestra, Koszalin Philharmonic Orchestra and several symphony orchestras in the country such as the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Torun Symphony Orchestra. She cooperates as conductor with academic orchestras of music universities in Warsaw, Bialystok and Bydgoszcz. In other countries, she has conducted the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra in Finland, Pori Sinfonietta in Finland, Sinfonietta Baden in Austria, Liszt-Wagner Orchestra in Hungary, Teatro Lirico Sperimentale “A. Belli” Orchestra in Italy, Danish National Symphony Orchestra in Denmark and American Academy of Conducting Orchestra in Aspen, USA.

In 2007, she debuted as an opera conductor with W. A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute in the Grand Theatre-National Polish Opera in Warsaw during the IV International Theatre Schools Festival. In the same year she conducted performances of the spectacle Rosary by Weronika Ratusinska and worked as assistant conductor on G. Puccini’s opera Tosca with the Koszalin Philharmonic Orchestra. In the season 2008/2009, she has been music director and conductor of the production of S. Moniuszko’s opera Flis in Bialystok with performances also during the VIII Moniuszko Podlasie Festival, and in 2009 of the production of the Johann Strauss operetta Vienna blood during the XVI Bydgoszcz Opera Festival.

She is a laureate of the Polish National Competition for Young Cellists in Wroclaw (Honorable Mention Award, 1997), Polish National Competition for Young Cellists in Warsaw (2nd Prize, 1998) and Polish National Chamber Music Competition in Warsaw (string quartet, 1st Prize, 2000). As conductor she is a laureate of the IV Lutoslawski International Conducting Competition in Bialystok, Poland (3rd Award, 2006), semifinalist of the VIII Fitelberg International Conducting Competition in Katowice, Poland (awarded the Polish Television Prize, 2007) and finalist of the XV Competition for Orchestra Conductors of the European Union in Spoleto, Italy (2008). In 2008 she was scholarship holder of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
