Jarosław Wolanin,

conductor and saxophonist; b. in Brzozów. He studied choral conducting with Jan Wojtacha (diploma with distinction in 2002) and saxophone with Bernard Steuer (studies completed in 2003) at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. In 2001-02 he obtained a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

He has won prizes in several saxophone competitions. As a conductor, since 1999 he has led many choirs in Upper Silesia, e.g. the Silesia Singers Chamber Choir and the Mariacki Choir in Katowice (he is the director of the latter one). He has worked with the Silesian Philharmonic Choir since 2001 - first as a choir member, and since 2009 - as its artistic director and conductor. He has significantly extended this choir’s repertoire of a cappella works, and prepared the choir for performances under such conductors as Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk, Jan Wincenty Hawel, Jan Krenz, Krzysztof Penderecki, Marek Pijarowski, Tadeusz Wojciechowski, Mykola Dyadiura, Massimiliano Caldi, Paul McCreesh and Matthias Geissler. Since 2003 he has also conducted the Sinfonietta Sonora Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Katowice. With both the choir and the orchestra he has given concerts in Poland, Germany, Czech Republic and France.

Jarosław Wolanin conducted premiere performances of many new works by contemporary composers. He frequently includes in his concert programmes masterpieces of choral music which have not been previously performed in Poland, such as Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto for Choir. Since 2003 he has taught saxophone in music schools (since 2006 - in the State Primary Music School in Oświęcim). In 2006-08 he also taught conducting at the Institute of Jazz.
