“An accordion is like a chameleon,” said the eminent Vienna-based Polish composer Zbigniew Bargielski in a conversation with the accordion player Zbigniew Koźlik. This statement is well illustrated by Bargielski’s own accordion pieces, also those recorded on this CD. In Traumvogel, the sound colour of the accordion perfectly corresponds to the percussion sound, now blending with it, now forming sharp contrasts. In Black mirror, the accordion forms a rich backdrop of colour for the guitar, here played by the composer’s daughter. In Three Polish suites and the Dance-and-song suite, Bargielski proved that the accordion can perfectly express the character of Polish folk music- full of humour, but at times imbued with melancholy.
