Cracow | Concerts of the Cracow Accordion Festival 2023

Media patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

KrakowskiFestiwalAk 23 Concerts of the Cracow Accordion Festival will be held in Cracow from the 30th of September to the 13th of December.

The Festival is an international celebration of accordion music in various genres and styles in the capital of Małopolska - Cracow. The concerts will be held in the Palace of Art, the Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace – a branch of the National Museum in Cracow, the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music and the Church of St. Marcin.

In 2023, as part of the Festival concert series, the accordion will be compared with other keyboard instruments such as the piano, organ or harpsichord. An interesting summary will be the combination of an accordion with a baroque costume and a unique keyboard instrument - viola organista, which was recreated from Leonardo da Vinci’s designs.

An important element will also be the 10th anniversary edition of the Concert of Premieres of Accordion Works, which will present solo and chamber works by composers such as Jakub Polaczyk, Olga Hans and Jarosław Płonka. In addition to the performance of well-known and respected artists from Poland and abroad, concerts of the Cracow Accordion Festival will enable the presentation and promotion of the Cracow accordion community, both academic and those operating outside of the university. The project is aimed at audiences of contemporary music.

FO 29.9.23A long-standing tradition is the presence of works of the patron of the Opole Philharmonic - Józef Elsner - during the concert inaugurating of the new artistic season. On the 29th of September, 2023 at 7 p.m. a unique work will be performed. The 72nd season will open with the Overture from the opera The Sacrifice of Abraham, followed by Ludomir Różycki's Violin Concerto, interpreted by the recognized violinist Janusz Wawrowski.

The Sacrifice of Abraham is one of two works on biblical themes (along with the unpreserved Judgment of Solomon) and the only melodrama in Elsner's oeuvre. The piece will be presented by the Opole Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Przemysław Neumann.

Violin Concerto (1944) by Ludomir Różycki is the last opus in life of the creator of the Polish national ballet. The latest reconstruction of the work will be performed in Opole, in which Ryszard Bryła used not only the preserved piano reduction, but also included - previously considered lost - fragments of the score's manuscripts along with the composer's instrumentation instructions.
