Warsaw | SuperSam +1: Han Bennink & Tomasz Gwinciński

ss

The first concert from this year's series of master performances „SuperSam + 1”, organised by the „Mózg Foundation”, will take place 12 April 2018 at 7.30 p.m. at the “Mózg Powszechny” club (20 Zamoyskiego St., Warsaw). The main performers will be Han Bennink and Tomasz Gwinciński.

Han Bennink was born in 1942 in Zaandam. He is a visual artist as well as drummer par excellence. Often the two talents converge, when he performs at his exhibitions. His first percussion instrument was a kitchen chair, and as of late he has returned to the simple instruments and often performs only on a snare drum. His curiosity with regard to sound has led him to engage in successively more exciting explorations with wood and wind instruments and collaborations with other musicians, expanding the jazz context in the direction of European improvised music. Today more than ever before, Bennink understands how to swing in the traditional way and to master the free jazz sound, as well as to generate collective gusto for playing with his musical partners. Along with Misha Mengelberg, Willem Breuker and Peter Brötzmann he has played a vital role in the genesis of European free jazz and his Han Bennink Trio has produced surprising insights into the jazz experience and improvised music.

Tomasz Gwinciński is a guitarist, percussionist and composer born in 1963 in Bydgoszcz. He studied Medicine and Philosophy and then composition with Bogusław Schaeffer. He is one of the founders of the so-called yass scene. In 1990 he founded the group Trytony, whose first album “Tańce Bydgoskie” was an unusual mixture of improvised music of line Eric Dolphy-John Coltrane-Ornette Coleman with classical music tradition of the 20th century (e.g. Bela Bartok). He worked with such musicians as Ryszard “Tymon” Tymański, Mikołaj Trzaska and Kazik Staszewski. He played on the cult record “Rozmowy s catem” with Kazik and Mazzoll & Arythmic Perfection. Bands Gwinciński / Richter / Skolik, Łoskot and Mazzoll Arhytmic Perfection are among his frequent collaborators. Gwinciński is also the author of theatre music and music producer.

“Supersam + 1” is a series of master performances. The project focuses mainly on music, however, it also includes other forms of expression such as: performance, multimedia, monodrama. “SUPERSAM + 1” will present respected Polish and foreign artists whose work is original, experimental and innovative.
