On April 27, 2018 at 7.30 p.m. The Warsaw Philharmonic will host a symphony concert "Independent - Created in Free Poland". The programme will feature works of Polish and Russian composers.
The concert will start with Overture for symphony orchestra by Ignacy Jan Paderewski. As part of a Jubilee series of Polish works from the interwar period, the audience will hear the rarely performed Piano Concerto in D‑flat Major by Jerzy Gablenz – a composer and industrialist (an esteemed Kraków vinegar and mustard manufacturer), a monumental work of neo‑Romantic rapture. As a student of Władysław Żeleński and Feliks Nowowiejski, Gablenz had a solid music background, which gained him considerable recognition in his own lifetime, although he is mostly remembered thanks to his songs. The composer’s son, Tomasz, organised the world premiere of the Concerto in the Dominican Republic (1977, with Józef Stompel on piano), where he lives.
In 1925, Dmitri Shostakovich completed,his Symphony No. 1, on which he had worked for a long time with breaks, and a year later he managed to regain his place in the St. Petersburg Conservatory and submit the Symphony as his graduation project. Its value was acknowledged by his professors, who arranged for it to be performed in public on 10 May 1926 as part of a graduation students’ concert. The work was highly acclaimed, and its success was quickly confirmed in numerous performances abroad (a year after its premiere, it was met with an ovation in Berlin, under the baton of Bruno Walter himself). With this composition, the 19-year‑old genius embarked on a wonderful career as the leading symphony composer of the 20th century.
The concert is funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the NIEPODLEGŁA multi‑annual programme for 2017–2021 and is produced under the patronage of PWM Edition as part of the project TUTTI.pl promoting the performance of Polish music.
