Gdańsk | Michał Dobrzyński's "Tango" at the Baltic Opera

Tango

On 26, 27 and 28 October 2018 Michał Dobrzyński's Tango opera with libretto based on the drama by Sławomir Mrożek will be staged at the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk.

One of the most important Polish dramas, Tango by Sławomir Mrożek, has been translated to the language of opera by Michał Dobrzyński, acclaimed Polish composer of contemporary music. Mrożek's drama, a multi-faceted work full of nuances, has been divided into parts and put together again – this time, however, the center of gravity was transferred from the text to the verbal-musical layer. The work acquired new meanings and became a completely new story, which does not deviate from the assumptions of Mrożek's original.

The world premiere of Tango, directed by Maciej Wojtyszko and performed under the direction of José Maria Florêncio, took place in December 2017 at the Warsaw Chamber Opera. The work was received enthusiastically by the audience, and one of the Polishc most important theater portal (teatrdlawas.pl) awarded the composer with the honorable "Opera Glare of the Year 2017" in the "best music" category. In addition, countertenor Jan Jakub Monowid, who plays the main role in the opera (Artur), was honored in the " best role" category. On October 22, 2018, Dobrzyński's opera was staged at the Estonian National Opera.

Tango is a production of the Warsaw Chamber Opera. Tthe project was co-financed from the funds of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage as part of the "Collections – Composing Commisions" programe, carried out by the Institute of Music and Dance.
