Kraków | Maestro Penderecki's Birthday

Penderecki

On the occasion of the 85th birthday anniversary of Krzysztof Penderecki, the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Kraków dedicates its next oratorio concerts on November 23 and 24, 2018 to the distinguished guest.

The ensembles of the Kraków Philharmonic under the baton of American conductor John Axelrod will perform, among others, two masterpieces written in different periods of Penderecki's career – Adagietto from Paradise Lost and Double Concerto for violin and viola.

Paradise Lost is an opera created forty years ago at the request of Lyric Opera in Chicago to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the United States. Lyrical Adagietto from this opera is often performed as an independent piece. Double Concerto for violin and viola was written in 2012 and was dedicated to the outstanding violinist and viola player Julian Rachlin, who premiered the piece with Janine Jansen in the violin solo part. At the Cracow Philharmonic, as soloists will perform: violinist Marta Kowalczyk – concertmaster of the Symphony Orchestra in Basel, and violist Maja Bogdanović.

The concert programms will be complemented by works close to the conductor's heart: On the Waterfront symphony suite, written by Leonard Bernstein as the soundtrack to the famous Elia Kazan's film of the same title, and Agnus Dei for eight voices choir, written by Samuel Barber in 1976 on the basis of his Adagio for strings.
