Warsaw | 23rd International Symposium "Beethoven and the Songs of Romanticism"

Beethoven

The 23rd International Symposium "Beethoven and the Songs of Romanticism" will take place on April 8-9, 2019 in the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw as part of the 23rd Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival.

The international scientific symposium, taking up the motto of the 23rd Festival, will center around Ludwig van Beethoven's songs. Papers on this subject will be delivered by academics of European fame: Hermann Jung (Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim), Michael Heinemann (Hochschule für Musik Dresden), Christine Siegert (Beethoven-Haus Bonn) and Susanne Cox (Beethoven-Haus Bonn). The paper by Nils Holger Petersen (Københavns Universitet) will refer directly to the theme of Easter: he will discuss the musical image of Christ in the oratorio Christus am Ölberge by Beethoven.

An important part of the event will be presentations devoted to Polish music. Sławomir Żerańska-Kominek (Institute of Musicology, University of Warsaw) will answer the question: Is Fryderyk Chopin's fiancé a key to the interpretation of the Finale of the Funeral Sonata? The celebrations of the Stanisław Moniuszko year will be reflected in Magdalena Chrenkoff (Academy of Music in Krakow) and Katarzyna Szymańska-Stułka (UMFC) paper about Moniuszko's songs. The works of Krzysztof Penderecki and Paweł Szymański will be the subject of reflection by Regina Chłopicka and Natalia Szwab (Academy of Music in Krakow).
