Katowice | Concert to Commemorate 40th Anniversary of Pacification of "Wujek" Mine

FSThe Upper Silesian Pantheon and the Silesian Philharmonic organise a special event on 12 December 2021 at 7.00 at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice. A symphonic concert, filled with extremely emotional and expressive music, will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the pacification of the "Wujek" mine.

On 16 December 1981, ZOMO units and the army carried out the bloodiest pacification during the martial law period – a massacre in the KWK "Wujek" coal mine, where about three thousand miners were on strike. The 40th anniversary of the pacification will be commemorated with a unique concert. The Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yaroslav Shemet, together with the outstanding soloist Monika Sendrowska, will celebrate it with the music of Silesian composers. We will hear the most famous symphony by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, the extremely lyrical and meditative Symphony No. 3 "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" and the premiere of a new piece by Adam Wesołowski, Songs of Angels for string orchestra, prepared especially for this occasion.

Górecki's Symphony No. 3 is a piece that touched the hearts of millions around the world. In three movements the composer used a 15th-century Polish lament of Mary, mother of Jesus, a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, and a Silesian folk song of a mother searching for her son killed by the Germans in the Silesian uprisings. Wesołowski's Songs of Angels is a piece inspired by the desire to take the listener into a world far from worldly problems. Symbolically, it refers to the light, God and the angelic choirs.
