On the 84th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II on the 1st of September, 2023 at 19.45 in the Zamość Rotunda there will be a concert of the Karol Namysłowski Symphony Orchestra in Zamość conducted by Tadeusz Wicherek. Together with the soprano Ewa Tracz, they will perform the Third Symphony – ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’ Op. 36 by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki.
Symphony No. 3 was written in 1976, commissioned by the Südwestfunk radio station in Baden Baden. The premiere took place in Royan as part of the 14th International Festival of Contemporary Art. The recording of the work in the interpretation of Dawn Upshaw and the London Sinfonietta conducted by David Zinman in 1991 achieved over a million sales and won a gold record, which caused great interest in the Polish composer around the world.
The concert on the 1st of September will be dedicated to all the inhabitants of Zamość and the surrounding area who were murdered and deported to concentration camps during World War II.
