Łódź, Warszawa, Szczecin, Wrocław | Music of Jewish cantors back in Poland

MuzycznySwiatMedia patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

From the 12th of September to the 19th of November, 2023, as part of the ‘Music World of Gershon Efros’ project, works by Jewish cantors connected with our lands will be performed in Poland for the first time since World War II. They come from the extensive ‘Anthology of Synagogue Music’ prepared by Gerszon Efros (1890–1978), a composer born in Serock, who emigrated to the United States, where he promoted the music heritage of Polish Jews.

Under the substantive leadership of Dr. Jakub Stefek - organist at the Pestalozzistrasse Synagogue in Berlin and lecturer at the Academy of Art in Szczecin - an educational film about the music and message of Gerszon Efros's work, an information folder, a social media campaign, and works by Jewish cantors were included in the programmes of concerts in various cities in Poland.

We will be able to hear this music during the Four Cultures Festival in Łódź on the 12th of September, performed by Jakub Stefek and the VRC Choir conducted by Joanna Maluga. At the concert at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw on the 15th of October, Jakub Stefek and the Match Match Ensemble will also premiere Agnieszka Stulgińska's latest work. On the 19th of October, as part of the 6th International Days of Jewish Music in Szczecin, Jakub Stefek, the Choir of the Maritime University of Technology in Szczecin and cantor Isidoro Abramowicz, conducted by Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch, will perform. On the 19th of November, there will be an Extraordinary Havdalah Concert with the participation of Jakub Stefek, Isidoro Abramowicz and the Choir of the White Stork Synagogue in Wrocław, conducted by Stanisław Rybarczyk.

The organizer of the project is the SPOT.ON ART Foundation, a partner of the Marek Edelman Dialogue Center in Łódź, and the patron is the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. Financing was provided by the Embassy of the United States in Warsaw.
