Warsaw | Premiere of Paweł Pudło's "Whistleblower" and Mikołaj Majkusiak's "Concerto in Air"

WW+F

The inaugural concert of the Warsaw Winds + Festival on 29 November 2019 at 7 p.m. at the Witold Lutosławski Polish Radio Concert Studio in Warsaw will premiere works by Paweł Pudło and Mikołaj Majkusiak.

The title of Paweł Pudło's Whistleblower refers to the name of people who inform the public, among others about irregularities in the functioning of states, special services or corporations. Whistleblowers and their deeds often face extreme, turbulent emotions on the part of society, despite the fact that the information they disclose is extremely important to avoid armed conflicts or maintain a balance between mass surveillance and freedom. The whistleblower spreads ideas, but will society accept them? This will be revealed during the premiere of Paweł Pudło's work.

The concert will also include the premiere of Mikołaj Majkusiak's Concerto in Air in a version for wind quintet and piano. The works will be presented by the Lutosławski Quartet, double bass player Tomasz Januchta and the Gruppo di Tempera ensemble composed of: Agata Igras (flute), Sebastian Aleksandrowicz (oboe), Adrian Janda (clarinet), Artur Kasperek (bassoon), Tomasz Bińkowski (French horn) and Agnieszka Kopacka-Aleksandrowicz (piano). In their performance we will also listen to La Danse de la sorcière from the ballet Le Jardin du Paradis by Alexander Tansman, Wind Quintet by Michał Spisak and Dixtuor pour quintette à vent et quintette à cordes by Jeans Françaix.

Łódź | In Memory of Roman Ryterband (1914-1979)

AM Łódź

An International Conference, „Roman Ryterband as an heir and advocate of Polish musical traditions in the United States,” will take place at the Łódź Music Academy on 30 November 2019. The programme will include a concert, scholarly presentations and the unveiling of a memorial plaque.

This will be the first such event in Poland devoted to life and music of Roman Ryterband— composer, pianist, conductor and music educator. Born in Łódź 105 years ago in 1914, Ryterband was a world citizen who died in Palm Springs, California, in 1979. Living outside Poland after 1939, he successfully developed his artistic career, residing, in turn, in Switzerland, Canada and, for almost 20 years, in the United States. Nonetheless, he did not neglect his links to Polish culture and traditions, as witnessed by his activities as artist and promoter, as well as by his music that is inspired by Polish history and folklore. Ryterband’s musical career began in Łódź; he wrote his first composition here while still a teenager. He studied music at the Helena Kijeńska-Dobkiewiczowa Music Academy and, before the war, had worked for Łódź Radio and collaborated with local theatres. The first concerts featuring his works were also held here, in Łódź.

The goals of this international Conference are to rediscover and return Roman Ryterband’s rich musical opus to Polish audiences who had no chance to hear it in Poland during the composer’s life and after his death. The organizers of the Conference, “Roman Ryterband as an heir and advocate of Polish music traditions in the United States” include the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Music Academy in Łódź and the Polish Music Center at the University of Southern California, where a collection of documents and manuscripts of compositions by Roman Ryterband are held. The honorary guests of the Conference will include members of Roman Ryterband’s family, who will travel to Poland for the first time.

Scholarly presentations about Roman Ryterband are scheduled for Saturday, 30 November, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Hall 31 of the Music Academy. A concert of solo, chamber and choral works by Roman Ryterband will follow at 4 p.m. in the Academy’s Chamber Hall. The participating artists will include musicians and scholars from the USC Thornton School of Music and Polish Music Center in Los Angeles, as well as performers from music academies and conservatories in Łódź, Kraków, and Prague.

A plaque commemorating Roman Ryterband will be officially unveiled on Friday, November 29, at the composer’s birthplace on Narutowicza 40

The premiere of Maciej Zakrzewski's album "Time to Time"

Zakrzewski

Time to Time, the new album of the Gdańsk composer and organist Maciej Zakrzewski, will be released Ars Sonora on 9 December 2019. The recordings were made on the organs of the Archcathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka in Łódź.

The title of the album has a symbolic meaning. On the one hand, it refers to the process of creating a work that arises at various time intervals, unhindered by the need to accomplish a task in a rigid framework, on the other hand, it refers to the philosophy of time in music – its transience and temporality.

The album contains the seven-part suite The Allegories, which is a musical image of the present, in which age-old, important questions, ideas, elements, emotions clashes with virtual reality that changes our perception of life in society (Like, Face to book, To be or not online, Log out). This dramatic confusion of two realities makes us ask again what is real, important, timeless, and what is only a delusion, creation and gallantry.

The album also includes Psalterium – a four-part cycle illustrating subsequent, selected texts of psalms from the Old Testament (Ps. 91 "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High", Ps. 7 "O Lord my God, I take refuge in You", Ps. 113 / 117 "Hallelujah, Praise the Lord, all you nations"), although it opens with the Jewish prayer of Shema Ijrael ("Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength"). The Psalterium is the answer to the dichotomy of the world illustrated in The Allegories.

Reflection No. 4 was premiered during the 27th Takefu International Music Festival in Japan – the composition was commissioned by the organizers of the project. He is a graduate of Keimyung University and the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, where he also obtained a doctorate in musical arts under the supervision of Prof. Marcin Błażewicz. In the Sanjo cycle for solo instruments or voice, the composer presents his own view of traditional Korean music using contemporary compositional means and Western instruments, which are to imitate Korean instruments through the use of appropriate performance techniques. Eunho Chang himself will play on one of these instruments, called saenghwang. We will also listen to the Lyric Nocturne for a traditional Chinese bamboo flute called dizi. FS

The International Day of People with Disabilities is celebrated every year in December. The programme is also adapted to the dysfunctions of recipients so that they can take an active part in the events.

The musical work composed by Krzysztof Dobosiewicz based on the libretto of the opera Salija by Małgorzata Szwajlik will take the audience to magical places and move their imagination. It will tell the story of Salia, a girl who learns to appreciate what she has – home, family, everyday life and little joys.
