Wrocław | Songs of a Princess

The great attraction of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic concert on the 25th of March 2022 at 7 p.m. conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero will be the Polish premiere of the new version of Six Songs of a Fairy Tale Princess by Karol Szymanowski. The solo part will be sung by Iwona Sobotka, one of the most respected and recognizable Polish singers of our time.

The concert will begin with the performance of Interludium – a short, late work by Witold Lutosławski, which was supposed to go between two other pieces: Chain II and Partita. It is devoid of any contrasts and maintains quiet dynamics and a slow pace. The fantastic, oneiric mood created in it makes it considered one of the best pieces in Lutosławski’s oeuvre.
Six Songs of a Fairy Tale Princess by Szymanowski, was written in 1915 to texts by the composer’s sister, Zofia. Long, arabesque vocalizations of the solo voice create an unreal, fairy-tale and exotic atmosphere. The individual movements received the following titles: Lonely Moon, Nightingale, Golden Shoes, Dance, Song of the Wave and Feast. From among these miniatures, Szymanowski composed the first, second and fourth for voice and orchestra in 1933. The third, fifth and sixth have not been orchestrated until modern times – they were prepared by the Italian composer Bruno Dozza.

We will also listen to Sieben frühe Lieder, by Alban Berg and Symphonic Metamorphoses on the theme of Carl Maria von Weber by Paul Hindemith

Gdańsk, Koszalin, Olsztyn | Penderecki in memoriam

On the second anniversary of distinguished Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s death series of concerts dedicated to his work will take place. The event „Penderecki in memoriam” will be held on the 24th, 25th and 27th of March 2022 in the Polish Baltic Philharmonic in Gdańsk, Koszalin Philharmonic and Warmia and Masuria Philharmonic in Olsztyn.

Music of the great composer will be performed by the Chamber Orchestra Baltic Alians directed by Robert Kabara. Two parts of the event ‘Sacrum’ and ‘Profanum’ will comprise of Chaccone in Memoria del Giovanni Paolo II, Agnus Dei, De profundis from the Seven Gates of Jerusalem, Serenade for string orchestra, Trzy utwory w dawnym stylu (Three Pieces in Old Style) for string orchestra and Sinfonietta per archi.

Cracow and Warsaw | 'Polish Music Scene': Michał Francuz

On the 19th of March 2022 at 6 p.m. in Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Cracow and on the 22nd of March at 7 p.m. in the National Philharmonic in Warsaw versatile pianist, chamber musician and pedagogue Michał Francuz will perform. The concert is co-organized by the National Institute of Music and Dance as part of the programme ‘Polish Music Scene’ financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

The audience will be able to hear Two Mazurkas Op. 37 and Two Nocturnes Op. 24 by Feliks Dobrzyński, Sonata No. 2 op 20 by Władysław Żeleński and Sonata No. 4 Op. 56 by Mieczysław Wajnberg.

Warsaw | Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra - Concert dedicated to fighting Ukraine

On the 19th of March 2022 at 7 p.m. in the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of the Polish Radio Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra will perform together with conductor Paweł Przytocki and Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova at the concert dedicated to fighting Ukraine.

The concert will start with Ukraine’s national anthem, Ще не вмерла України ні слава, ні воля (“Ukraine has not yet died, nor her glory, nor her freedom”), the lyrics of which (written by Pavlo Chubynsky) are an intended reference to the incipit of Dąbrowski’s Mazurka.

The programme will also include pieces composed by artists representing the same generation of Ukrainian music who, however, followed different paths and stylistic trends. Myroslav Skoryk, born in 1938, was a prominent figure in Ukraine’s musical environment as a composer and musicologist, as well as an artistic director of the Kyiv Opera. Valentyn Silvestrov, one year senior to Skoryk, is one of the most popular Ukrainian composers in the world. His music has undergone an interesting evolution from avant-garde experiments to postmodern turn towards tradition, which his music draws fascinating inspirations from. The Messenger is a particularly interesting example, because the piece includes references to Mozart’s music, decomposed and subjectively arranged into new qualities.

During the concert, the solo piano parts will be performed by Anna Fedorova, an eminent Ukrainian artist, winner of numerous international piano competitions. She performs solo as a chamber musician and with symphonic orchestras in such prestigious halls as Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées or Zurich Tonhalle. She gave performances at festivals in Germany, France, Italy, Ukraine, the United States, Mexico and Argentina, and is also well known to Polish audiences.

The concert will be directed by outstanding conductor Paweł Przytocki, the Artistic Director of the Arthur Rubinstein Philharmonic in Łódź since the 2017-2018 season.

Anna Sułkowska-Migoń took part in the concert preparation as participant of the ‘Conductor-Resident’ programme. The event is co-organized by the National Institute of Music and Dance as part of the programme ‘Conductor-Resident’ financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

Cracow | 2nd concert devoted to Jerzy Fitelberg:

Pan Ton String Quartet in cooperation with the National Museum in Cracow and the Polish Viola Society invites to the 2nd Monographic Concert devoted to the chamber music of Jerzy Fitelberg written for string quartet. The concert will take place on the 19th of March 2022 at 5 p.m. in the Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace – branch of the National Museum in Cracow in Kanonicza 17 street.
During the concert Pan Ton String Quartet will present three pieces for string quartet by Jerzy Fitelberg: Fantasia ‘The last moments of Till Eulenspiegel’ (1920), Quartet No. 4 (1936) and Quartet No. 5 (1945).
In the works of Jerzy Fitelberg (1903-1951) we can find a unique fusion of styles, trends and creative directions from various European and North American artistic circles seen in the first half of the 20th century. Fitelberg remains forgotten and underestimated despite the fact that his music was often performed at many important festivals and concerts before his death.

Łódź | 40th Jubilee of Prof. Sławomir Kaczorowski

On the 19th of March 2022 at 6 p.m. a concert on the occasion of 40th jubilee of Prof. Sławomir Kaczorowski will take place at the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź.

Prof. Sławomir Kaczorowski (*1956) graduated from the class of composition of Prof. Bronisław Kazimierz Przybylski and music theory class at the State Conservatory of Music in Łódź where he holds a composition class since 1997. Among his graduates Grzegorz Duchnowski and Tomasz Szczepanik are worth mentioning as laureates of national and international composition competitions.

Prof. Sławomir Kaczorowski is a member of the Polish Society of Authors and Composers and the Polish Composers’ Union.

Concerto for Two Flutes and orchestra (2021) and Missa Brevis for mezzo soprano, choir and orchestra (2020) will be performed by the Choir and Symphony Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Łódź conducted by Jerzy Swoboda as well as by Urszula Kryger (mezzo soprano) and János Bálint i Ewelina Zawiślak (flutes). The orchestra will also perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony in E flat Major op 5. 'Eroica'.

Wrocław | Trios and sonatas

NFMOn the 17th of March 2022 at 7 p.m. at the National Forum of Music chamber concert featuring Polish string players Bartłomiej Nizioł, Radosław Pujanek and Tomasz Daroch. Artists will perform trios and sonatas of four composers among others Feliks Janiewicz.

Feliks Janiewicz is a mysterious figure from the time of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He used to perform at the King Stanisław August Poniatowski court as well as in Italy, France and England.

Two of his trios for two violins and cello will be played at the concert as well as Sonata for two violins op. 10 of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Sonata for violin and cello of Maurice Ravel and Sonata for Solo Violin, Op. 27, No. 2 by Eugène Ysaÿe.

Warsaw | Tomasz J. Opałka 'Ars Moriendi. Requiem Giocoso' premiere

The premiere performance of the opera Ars Moriendi. Requiem Giocoso by Tomasz J. Opałka commissioned by the Polish Royal Opera will take place on the 17th of March 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of the Polish Radio.

The oldest Polish baroque presentation of the medieval motif was the starting point for the composition. The 17th century Dance of Death paining to be found in the Bernardines church in Cracow became an inspiration for Tomasz J. Opałka one of the most interesting composers of young generation. The composition itself is quite special not only for the composer himself but also for the artists and friends of the Polish Royal Opera, artistic director of which, late Ryszard Peryt, initiated the project.

Baroqe and folk inspirations, electronic music and modern orchestral texture come together in this tale about the inevitable ultimate end.

Warsaw | 13th edition of the Festival ‘New Epiphanies’

13th edition of the interdisciplinary Festival ‘New Epiphanies’ organized by The Centre for the Thought of John Paul II will begin on the 2nd of March and will last till the 10th of April 2022. Jesus will be the central figure of this year’s edition and the theme ‘Why have you forsaken me?’.

The programme will comprise 8 theater premieres, concerts, installations and culinary event. Performances will take place in Warsaw in Theaters (TR Warszawa, Rampa, Powszechny, Komun Warszawa/Szkoła, Collegium Nobilium) spaces of Etnographic Museum, Station of Art Gallery, Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art and in Evangelical Reformed Church and Camaldolese Church.

The main purpose of the Festival is the search for new, contemporary epiphanies of beauty and creative dialogue between artists and traditional sacred art as in the “Letter to artists” of John Paul II. The most recent works of Polish composers like Ignacy Zalewski, Mateusz Żaboklicki, Katarzyna Szwed, Julianna Bloodgood and Szymon Godziemba-Trytek will be performed.

Subsidized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the Culture Promotion Fund. The project is co-financed by the City of Warsaw.
