Katowice | Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's "Sanctus Adalbertus" at the Silesian Philharmonic

FS

Music lovers gathered in the Silesian Philharmonic on 29 November 2019 at 7 p.m. will witness an extraordinary event –  the Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and Choir under the baton of Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk will perform Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's oratorio Sanctus Adalbertus, Op. 71.

The concert will begin with Krzysztof Meyer's Piano Concerto, Op. 46 performed by Piotr Sałajczyk, considered by critics to be among the most outstanding Polish performers of his generation, winner of the "Fryderyk" phonographic award and the "Orpheus" award "for outstanding performances of Polish music". Then we will listen to Sanctus Adalbertus with solo parts performed by world-class soloists, Ewa Tracz and Stanislav Kuflyu. The oratorio was written in 1997 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the death of Saint. Adalbert. It was to be performed during the John Paul II pilgrimage to Poland, but, unfortunately, due to the composer's illness, the prformance did not take place. The oratorio was found by Mikołaj Górecki and in 2015, five years after the death of its creator, Sanctus Adalbertus was performed for the first time.

The CD with the work by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki will be released later this year. The project is co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund under the "Musical trace" programme implemented by the Institute of Music and Dance.

Warsaw | Warsaw Winds+ Festival

Warsaw Winds +

Chamber music works for wind instruments plus strings, piano and voice in a wealth of musical contexts and masterful performances. This is the idea behind the Warsaw Winds + Festival – a new event on the cultural map of Warsaw that will take place from 28 November to 1 December 2019.

This musical venture will change the perception of wind instruments among a wide audience. Everyone will find something for themselves in the festival program – from the popular songs of Stanisław Moniuszko in new arrangements, through the classical repertoire for string quartet and wind quintet, the premiere works of young generation composers – Mikołaj Majkusiak and Paweł Pudło, to improvisations on early music themes by Bastarda Trio.

For the initiators of the Warsaw Winds + Festival – the Warsaw sextet Gruppo di Tempera – chamber music is not only the most important career path, but also the greatest passion. Their goal is to present chamber music at the highest world level, which they have made one of the festival's leitmotifs. This idea connects all this year's artists, including: Bastarda Trio, Lutosławski Quartet, the mentioned sextet Gruppo di Tempera, as well as singers Urszula Kryger and Szymon Komasa. The Festival will feature Polish music – classical and contemporary, popular and less known, juxtaposed with works from the world canon.

Co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund as part of the "Music" programme implemented by the Institute of Music and Dance.

Rzeszów | Musical Horn of Plenty

FP

Krzysztof Penderecki's Horn Concerto 'Winterreise' will be performd on 29 November 2010 at 7 p.m. in the Artur Malawski Philharmonic in Rzeszów.

French horn's noble, soft timbre was already appreciated by the Viennese classics, and in the nineteenth century the French horn was inseparably associated with the romantic atmosphere. Echoes of past eras will be heard in the one-part Concerto for French horn "Winterraise" ("Winter journey", 2008) by Krzysztof Penderecki. The solo part will be performed by Jacek Muzyk. The atmospheric fragments of this work are intertwined with the "grotesque note", and at times the composition may even bring to mind associations with film music.

In the second part of the evening we will listen to the E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial: Adventure on Earth and the Symphony "Star Wars" by John Williams – one of the most famous and titled American film music composers awarded with numerous "Oscar" statuettes. The Subcarpathian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra will perform under the baton of the American trombone player and conductor Stefan Sanders, a graduate of the Juilliard School, University of Texas at Austin and Interlochen Arts Academy.

Łódź | In Memory of Roman Ryterband (1914-1979)

AM Łódź

An International Conference, „Roman Ryterband as an heir and advocate of Polish musical traditions in the United States,” will take place at the Łódź Music Academy on 30 November 2019. The programme will include a concert, scholarly presentations and the unveiling of a memorial plaque.

This will be the first such event in Poland devoted to life and music of Roman Ryterband— composer, pianist, conductor and music educator. Born in Łódź 105 years ago in 1914, Ryterband was a world citizen who died in Palm Springs, California, in 1979. Living outside Poland after 1939, he successfully developed his artistic career, residing, in turn, in Switzerland, Canada and, for almost 20 years, in the United States. Nonetheless, he did not neglect his links to Polish culture and traditions, as witnessed by his activities as artist and promoter, as well as by his music that is inspired by Polish history and folklore. Ryterband’s musical career began in Łódź; he wrote his first composition here while still a teenager. He studied music at the Helena Kijeńska-Dobkiewiczowa Music Academy and, before the war, had worked for Łódź Radio and collaborated with local theatres. The first concerts featuring his works were also held here, in Łódź.

The goals of this international Conference are to rediscover and return Roman Ryterband’s rich musical opus to Polish audiences who had no chance to hear it in Poland during the composer’s life and after his death. The organizers of the Conference, “Roman Ryterband as an heir and advocate of Polish music traditions in the United States” include the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Music Academy in Łódź and the Polish Music Center at the University of Southern California, where a collection of documents and manuscripts of compositions by Roman Ryterband are held. The honorary guests of the Conference will include members of Roman Ryterband’s family, who will travel to Poland for the first time.

Scholarly presentations about Roman Ryterband are scheduled for Saturday, 30 November, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Hall 31 of the Music Academy. A concert of solo, chamber and choral works by Roman Ryterband will follow at 4 p.m. in the Academy’s Chamber Hall. The participating artists will include musicians and scholars from the USC Thornton School of Music and Polish Music Center in Los Angeles, as well as performers from music academies and conservatories in Łódź, Kraków, and Prague.

A plaque commemorating Roman Ryterband will be officially unveiled on Friday, November 29, at the composer’s birthplace on Narutowicza 40
