Conference with Concert Series Face the Music
Vienna, May 3 - 5, 2006

The project Face the Music - A Tribute to Persecuted Musicians and Suppressed Music in Totalitarian Regimes of 20th Century Europe by the Platform Culture - Central Europe aims at gaining an overview of musicians and music persecuted and suppressed by totalitarian regimes of the 20th Century in Central Europe. Taking stock of the state of contemporary research the project should reveal existing deficits and seeks to encourage further research towards a 'European narrative of the 20th Century' (Rathkolb) in order to return this music to the place and appreciation it duly deserves.
In this context, the word 'musicians' includes composers, performing artists, musicologist, critics and other professionals in the field of music.
Using the term 'persecuted musicians' and 'suppressed music' in totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, it is necessary to make a clear distinction between persecution by National Socialism and by Communism. While for all artists censorship and suppression, persecution or exile means a profound rupture in their life and career, uprooting and threatening them, the persecution of Jewish musicians and their music by National Socialism is unique, as its prime goal was the extinction of the Jewish people. Therefore it is not comparable to 'mere' persecution for political reasons or by Communist regimes.
Not only in Austria and Germany, in every Central European country Jews fell victim to National Socialism. Apart from this group, Roma and Sinti, homosexuals and musicians who participated in resistance on political or religious grounds were persecuted. Some of them once again fell victim to persecution by hands of the communist regimes or expulsion of minorities after 1945.
Among the objectives of the conference is to clarify and discuss music as an instrument of totalitarian regimes and as a symbol for resistance and freedom, respectively.
