Lucjan Kaszycki has passed away...

It is with great regret that we say goodbye to Lucjan Kaszycki, our union colleague since 1958. He died on 5 May 2021 in Warsaw at the age of 89.

It was sang poignantly by Sława Przybylska, and then by many famous Polish singers, including Magda Umer, Kora, Kasia Nosowska, and Anna Maria Jopek.

Virtuoso Harpsichord Online

DDKOn 6 May 2021 at 5.00 p.m., as part of the "Węglin" Distric Community Centre's series "Always Classical", harpsichordist Paulina Tkaczyk will perform forgotten and rediscovered polonaises of Polish composers from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries as well as music of Marian Sawa.

We will hear polonaises by Józef Kozłowski, who worked in Poland (he was Michał Kleofas Ogiński's teacher) and in Russia, where he popularised this musical genre and wrote first choral polonaises; Karol Kurpiński, associated for many years with the National Theater in Warsaw, the author of music to the song Warszawianka; and Antoni Leopold, active at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Paulina Tkaczyk also aims at popularising works by Christlieb Siegmund Binder – a composer of the court of Augustus III – King of Poland and Elector of Saxony – and his grandson Frederick Augustus III. This artist was one of the most important precursors of the new musical aesthetics, which was born in the 18th century and led to the consolidation of the classical style. Richard Engländer wrote that in the Dresden circle Binder held the same position as Philipp Emmanuel Bach in Berlin. Binder was inspired, among others, by French music, which will also appear in the programme. We will hear works by Jacques Duphly and Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer – teacher of the son and daughters of Louis XV and Marie Leszczyńska.

The concert will end with Polish music of the 20th century: Marian Sawa's Burlesque of 1995.

"REnew" album with music to the words of Marian Hemar

HemarThe Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk has prepared a special release: the album ODnowa [REnew] with music to the words of Marian Hemar – an outstanding poet, unequaled satirist, author of plays, brilliant sketches and monologues, as well as a great songwriter with over 3,000 songs to his credit written for the best interwar cabarets.

There is no doubt that the patriotic attitude of the author of Chlib Kulikowski is a living example of the values that underlie the cultural and historical mission of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk. Marian Hemar was an uncompromising patriot who was deeply devoted to his homeland. The Museum decided to commemorate this very talented and artistically prolific "Pole by choice" – as he used to say about himself. A composition competition for a vocal piece to the words of Marian Hemar aimed at popularizing his somewhat forgotten, but extremely beautiful and inspiring poems. Three winners have been selected from the many applications from students and graduates of Polish music academies: Agnieszka Zimny, Dawid Ludkiewicz and Piotr Pudełko. They wrote music to the poems Modlitwa [Prayer], Rozmowa z żołnierzem [Conversation with a soldier], and Testament Chopina [Chopin's Testament].

The competition was part of a larger project, which is an album with music to the words of Marian Hemar. It contains 17 of the artist's best works, selected from his rich oeuvre. New song arrangements were prepared by students, graduates and lecturers of the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańśk under the supervision of Kamil Cieślik and performed by the Orchestra of the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Sopot under the baton of Wojciech Rajski, the Art'n'Voices ensemble and soloists: Marta Burdynowicz, Maria Malinowska, Karol Drozd and Jakub Kornacki.

A concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Third Silesian Uprising

FOThe concert on 7 May 2021 at 7.00 p.m. will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Third Silesian Uprising. Soprano Katarzyna Trylnik and the Opole Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Jakub Chrenowicz will perform Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's Symphony No. 3: Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.

This moving piece for soprano and orchestra will pay tribute to the insurgents fighting for the annexation of Upper Silesia to Poland and to all Silesians who died in this conflict. The anniversary of the Third Silesian Uprising is an opportunity to reflect on the history of Silesia, as well as a reminder of the multiculturalism of this region, which, despite its difficult and painful past, has found its strength and wealth in its cultural diversity.

Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Op. 36 for soprano and orchestra, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, is often mentioned as one of the most original masterpieces of 20th century music. The composer himself said: "Symphony No. 3 'Of Sorrowful Songs' was commissioned by the Baden-Baden Südwestfunk radio. I worked on it from 30th October to 30th December 1976. Its premiere took place at the 14th International Contemporary Art Festival on 4th April 1977. It was sung by Stefania Woytowicz with the Südwestfunk Symphony Orchestra under Ernest Bour. The Symphony consists of three songs, the first – and the longest one (ca. 27 minutes) – being a strict canon interrupted by a soprano invocation. Its theme uses a fragment of a Kurpie song from Father Władysław Skierkowski's collection. The second song – the shortest one – is a kind of a lamentation with a simple ABABC structure. The third song is a variation on an authentic folk tune from the Opole region from Adolf Dygacz's collection. I have dedicated the Symphony to my wife."

The concert will be available online on the Opole Philharmonic's YouTube channel from 7 May 2021.

35th Warsaw Music Encounters

ZKPThe 35th anniversary edition of the Warsaw Music Encounters will be held on 7-12 May 2021. All concerts combining early and new music will be available for free.

The Warsaw Music Encounters have been organised since 1986 by the Warsaw Branch of the Polish Composers' Union. It is the only festival focused on the work of composers active in Warsaw. Its characteristic feature is the presentation of unknown works of early music. A combination of historical and contemporary music sometimes creates surprising contexts, inspiring composers to write new works based on the languages of different eras. The festival provides an alternative to the "mainstream" repertoire presented daily in philharmonics and radio stations, and may also serve as an important supplement to it.

The programme of 2021 edition will include, among others, Polish multipercussion works performed by Hob-beats Percussion Group, compositions by Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa sang by La Tempesta ensemble with the accompaniment of Leszek Lorent, mini-opera for children Opera dizziness, piano recital by Kuba Sokołowski with guest appearance of Szábolcs Esztényi, organ recital by Michał Markuszewski, as well as a concert by Sikora Piano Duo and the Łomża Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jan Miłosz Zarzycki.

During the competition, the musicians will present works selected from amongst those written by 56 Polish composers mostly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The participants create a programme that they will perform in the successive stages of the competition.
