6th "New Waves" Contemporary Music Festival

Nowe FaleThe Sinfonietta Pomerania Foundation invites you to the 6th "New Waves" Contemporary Music Festival, which will be held online on 3-9 December 2020.

This year's sixth "New Waves" festival was designed to meet today's times – difficult for all of us, especially for artists. The festival concerts were recorded by the invited musicians, taking all precautionary measures, in halls filled with virtual audiences. The results of their work can be viewed on the Internet.

The significantly reduced programme of the festival will include a concert of works by students of composition classes at the Gdańsk Academy of Music, a performance of NeoQuartet, Sinfonietta Pomerania Orchestra and two excellent duos: Łukasz Frant & Joanna Galon-Frant cello-piano duo and Gabriela Szendzielorz-Jungiewicz & Andrzej Jungiewicz piano duo. In addition to the works by 20th-century composers, we will listen to new Polish music, including premieres of compositions by Kamil Kosecki, Anton Koshelev, Olga Rayeva, Piotr Jędrzejczyk, Monika Kędziora, Andrzej Henryk Bączyk, Magdalena Garbecka, Krzysztof Tomasz Jurczak, Piotr Kasiłowski, Magdalena Kurdziel, Szymon Kusior, Jakub Pawlak and Andrzej Dziadek – president of the Gdańsk Branch of the Polish Composers' Union and president of the Sinfonietta Pomerania Foundation. It was precisely because of the premieres that the organisers decided that the 6th "New Waves" festival should take place on the scheduled date, helping new pieces to appear in public space at the right time, without quarantining in composers' drawers.

19th Silesian Days of Contemporary Music

ZKPThe Polish Composers' Union invites you to the 19th Silesian Days of Contemporary Music which will run from 19 November to 8 December 2020. Recordings of the concerts will be published on the Facebook page of the Silesian Tribune of Composers, on the YouTube channel of the Polish Composers' Union (Katowice Branch) and on the websites of the co-organizers.

The first concert, performed by the MagDuś Duo (pianist Magdalena Duś and saxophonist Bartłomiej Duś), will feature Przemysław Szczotka's Simbiosis, written especially for the duo, and the premiere of Stanisław Bromboszcz's Monodrama for baritone saxophone and electronics. The programme of the concert entitled "Songs of Silesian Composers", performed by Ewa Biegas (soprano), Maciej Bartczak (baritone), Dagmara Niedziela (piano), Grzegorz Biegas (piano) and Justyna Młynarczyk (viola da gamba ), will include works by Edward Bogusławski, Józef Świder, Tomasz Bauć and Władysława Markiewiczówna as well as the premieres of Adrianna Kubica-Cypek's Sonnets to words by William Shakespeare and Wojciech Stępień's Five Letters to the Beautiful Knight to words by Rambald di Vaqueiras.

Piotr Senkowski's Trois nocturnes pour violon et piano and Marta Kleszcz's Tentativo III will be premiered in December by AdAstra Trio. The final concert will feature premieres of Przemysław Scheller's Dream of a butterfly quartet for piano, vibraphone and two shadows, and Krzysztof Gawlas' Approaching for two pianos, two percussions and electroacoustics.

The project was co-financed under the "Music" programme carried out by the Institute of Music and Dance.

In Memory of Professor Penderecki

FKThe first in the series of December online concerts of the Krakow Philharmonic, which will take place on 6 December 2020 at 6.00 p.m., was organized to celebrate the 87th birth anniversary of Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki. During the retransmission on the Philharmonic's YouTube channel, the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir under the baton of Antoni Wit will perform works by Rafał Janiak, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Krzysztof Penderecki, who is no longer among us.

The evening will open with the world premiere of Rafał Janiak's piece with a significant title Postscriptum 8'37 "≈8 (.) 6 ... in memoriam Krzysztof Penderecki. The composer wrote on the score: "Instead of using words, I try to sketch with sound a private portrait ... The score below is a tribute to the Master, which I had the honour to meet personally. It is therefore a "biographical work" in which, like in the cinema, threads from the composer's life are intertwined with the history of his native country. I have included in my piece numerous quotes from his music – some will certainly be immediately readable, while others are deeply processed and camouflaged in the thicket of sounds. 6 seconds – one year in a life –  8'37" – 86 years of precious time for Polish culture..."

The musicians will also perform Krzysztof Penderecki's diploma composition Epitaphium Artur Malawski in memoriam, Symphony No. 6 "Chinese Songs", the choral work O gloriosa Virginum, Agnus Dei composed in response to the passing of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, and the dramatic lament Stabat Mater. We will also listen to Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's Totus Tuus for mixed choir a cappella, which was to be performed during the pope John Paul II’s third pilgrimage to his native country. Górecki’s best-known sacred choral piece will commemorates the tenth anniversary of the composer's passing.

Saint Nicholas' Day with Walerian Pawłowski

FSzIn the afternoon of St. Nicholas' Day, 6 December 2020 at 5.00 p.m., the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra will present a beautiful music story. The "Valerian Droplets" concert will remind grown-ups and introduce to the little ones the extraordinary figure of Walerian Pawłowski, whose 100th birth anniversary is celebrated this year.

‘Valerian Droplets’ is a title once known to every little music lover in Szczecin. Its author, conductor, composer, music promoter, publicist and educator, Walerian Pawłowski was one of the most popular figures in the musical life of post-war Szczecin. On the 100th anniversary of the birth of this unique music and motorcycle enthusiast, the Szczecin Philharomnic decided to recall his figure, his informative, humorous musical stories, as well as his own compositions.

Amadeus: Arioso e furioso

AmadeusPolish Radio Chamber Orchestra Amadeus invites you to a unique online concert on 6 December 2020 at 7.00 p.m.

The epidemic situation and restrictions make it impossible to experience music together, but thanks to the collaboration with TVP3 Poznań, the Amadeus Orchestra will be present at homes of music lovers on Sunday, 6 December.

Led by Anna Duczmal-Mróz, the ensemble will perform together with an outstanding Polish guitarist, winner of many prestigious music awards – Łukasz Kuropaczewski. The artist has premiered many works by Polish and foreign composers, including Aleksander Tansman, Krzysztof Meyer, Angel Gilardino, Marc Neikrug and Mikołaj Górecki. The latter composer's Arioso e furioso will comprise the Sunday concert programme, next to Szymon Laks' String Quartet No. 3 "On Polish folk themes" arranged by Agnieszka Duczmal.

3rd "Mazovian Musical Meetings without Barriers" at the Liw Castle

Czas sztukiThe "Czas Sztuki" Foundation invites you to the seventh concert of the 3rd "Mazovian Musical Meetings without Barriers", devoted to Polish composers, which was performed at the Liw Castle. The online premiere will take place on 5 December 2020 at 7.00 p.m.

The "Czas Sztuki" Foundation was established in November 2017 and one of its main goals is to organise free artistic events for people from small rural towns, who are excluded from participating in cultural life. The organization has already conducted two series of concerts "Mazovian Musical Meetings without Barriers" in 2018 and 2019. The third edition of the series will feature 8 concerts, which will take place in very small towns in the counties of Mińsk, Siedlce and Węgrów, where residents are deprived of cultural offer and access to cultural goods.

The next concert will feature a duo of performers: violinist Maksymilian Grzesiak and pianist Aleksandra Dallali, who will present the most famous works by Polish composers: Karol Szymanowski, Henryk Wieniawski, Ignacy Jan Paderewski and Fryderyk Chopin.

Co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund.

The concert will be broadcast free of charge on the "Czas Sztuki" Foundation's YouTube and Facebook.

The Great Book of Miniatures, or a musical kaleidoscope

MajkaThe online premiere of the project entitled The Great Book of Miniatures, or a musical kaleidoscope of Grzegorz Majka will take place on 5 December 2020 at 8.00 p.m.

In 2017, contemporary Polish chamber literature was enriched with a series of 30 miniatures, composed by Grzegorz Majka as part of a creative scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. This year, on the other hand, 16 parts of the cycle were recorded thanks to the support of the National Centre for Culture as part of the "Culture on the web" programme. This is how The Great Book of Miniatures, or a musical kaleidoscope was created. As the composer points out, "Each of the 16 episodes of the series presents one miniature, based on a specific compositional technique or written in a specific aesthetics. The episodes include an introduction to the used technique, a presentation of the score, parts of the practice process with the composer's commentary, and finally the performance itself ". The project was realised with the participation of teachers and graduates of the Primary Music School in Domosławice.

The summary of the entire project will be presented on Saturday. All parts of the cycle will be performed as one, half-hour long music programme. The online premiere will take place on the project's Facebook page.

Warsaw Philharmonic: Online Symphonic Concert

FNA concert of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jakub Chrenowicz, with percussionists Colin Currie and Daniel Kamiński as soloists, will be streamed live from the Warsaw Philramonic on 4 December 2020 at 7.30 p.m. The programme will feature works by Samuel Barber, Andrzej Panufnik, Wojciech Kilar, as well as the Polish premiere of Concerto for marimba and strings "Now you hear me, now you don't" by Kurt Schwertsik.

Andrzej Panufnik penned his striking Concertino for Timpani, Percussion and Strings (1980) for a competition organized by the London Symphony Orchestra for novice percussionists. The author himself spoke about the idea behind the piece: "In this work I wanted to take a fresh look at percussion and to emphasise especially the expressive, even the singing quality of the instruments […] my intention was to compose a test of true musicianship: to demonstrate quality of sound, precision and above all an understanding of the musical content of the work, its poetic element".

A percussion idiophone – the marimba – will be the main character of Kurt Schwertsik’s recital. Following a period of avant-garde experimentation, this Austrian composer (born in 1935) turned to tradition and started writing accessible and tonal pieces, often bearing humorous titles, as is the case with his concerto Now you hear me, now you don’t from 2008.

Polish Music Experience – online

PolishMisucExp"Polish Music Experience" is a project of the "Porta Musicae" Artistic Association that aims to popularize Polish composers and artists in Poland and abroad. Four concerts will be broadcast live on the following Sundays in November 2020 (8, 15, 22 and 29) at 6.00 p.m.

The project will feature famous Kraków musicians, winners of international competitions and festival organisers: Maciej Zimka and Wiesław Ochwat (8 November), Trio Legend (15 November), Bartosz Sałdan and Cracow Duo: Kalinowski & Szlezer (22 November), Gajusz Kęska and Messages Quartet (29 November). The programme will include works by Fryderyk Chopin, Juliusz Zarębski, Aleksander Tansman, Andrzej Panufnik, Zbigniew Bargielski, Michał Papara, Szymon Stanisław Strzelec, Maciej Zimka, Kamil Kruk, Marcel Chyrzyński, and Wojciech Widłak. The concerts will also premiere Tomasz Opałka's Hype! and Andrzej Karałow's String Quartet „Particulae lucis”, which were created as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme of the Institute of Music and Dance.

Live broadcasts of concerts from the Marek Stachowski Chamber Hall at the Academy of Music in Kraków are held in cooperation with the Academy of Music in Kraków and the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Kraków.
