Gdańsk | 4th "New Waves" Contemporary Music Festival

Nowe Fale

The fourth edition of the "New Wave" Festival of Contemporary Music will take place in Gdańsk on November 17-25, 2018.

The programme of this year's Festival shows the current tendencies in contemporary music, which for the last half a century has been focused mainly on referencing: to Romanticism, other cultures, and in recent decades more and more often to the past avant-garde. Both European and American composers, whose works will be presented at a separate concert, mix various traditions, dialogue with the works of the period of Handel and Mozart, demonstrate longing for romantic moods and conventions of the 19th century music, and at the same time return to abandoned practices of 20th century moderna.

During the Festival, we will hear the premieres of compositions by Kamil Cieślik, Jonathan Dawe, Piotr Jędrzejczyk, Anna Ignatowicz-Glińska and Mikhail Travlos. The final event of the Festival will be the Gdańsk Concert of Pre-premieres, during which the works of the laureates of the Stanisław Moniuszko Composers Competition will be performed: PhatopoiAposiopesis by Jakub Polaczyk, Polifobia by Adam Diesner, Relaxation Music by Żaneta Rydzewska and Something New by Adam Józef Falenta.

For the second time, the festival will be accompanied by a national scientific conference: Methods of analyzing music of the 20th and 21st century. The meetings of musicologists will complement in an interesting way what will happen during the concerts.

Camilla Panufnik at TVP Kultura

TVP Kultura

On November 25, 2018 at 3:05 pm, the guest of Mateusz Matyszkowicz's programme "Literary Hooligan" in TVP Kultura will be the widow of the composer Sir Andrzej Panufnik  – Lady Camille Panufnik.

How is it living with a man with perfect pitch? Why did Andrzej Panufnik decide to leave Poland? How was it accepted in Great Britain? This is just some of the questions that will be asked in the extraordinary scenery of the Twickenham estate in London, on the banks of the Thames, where the composer Andrzej Panufnik lived and created. This time the conversation will concern not the language of literature but music.

On October 21, "Literary Hooligan" began a great British journey. After a series dedicated to France, it was time to diagnose the state of the British spirit, but also to talk about Polish culture, like in the programme devoted to Andrzej Panufnik. The guests of "Literary Hooligan" will be important figures of British socio-political scene: the most outstanding English writers, philosophers and historians, including among others Julian Barnes, Quentin Skinner, Anthony Beevor, Howard Jacobson, Adam Swift and others. The programme was filmed in extraordinary spaces, enclaves of Britishness: at the headquarters of the Globe theater, as well as on the roofs of the Tate Modern gallery in London.
