Germany | Mieczysław Wajnberg – songs for difficult times

Lieder 6.5.23Media patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

In 2018, Tomasz Raff premiered Mieczysław Weinberg's song cycles Triptych Op. 99 and Profile Op. 88 at the August-Kestner-Museum in Hanover. In May 2023, after 5 years of historical turmoil in the world, the artist returns to Germany to perform an extended Weinberg programme. The concerts will take place on the 7th of May at 5 p.m.  in the innovative co-working space ‘Die Rampe – Hannover’ and on the 6th of May 6 at 7.45 p.m. in Göttingen, in the Clavier-Salon run by Prof. Gerrit Zitterbart.

Both recitals will be performed by Tomasz Raff in a duet with pianist Monika Kolasińska. The intimate atmosphere of the recitals and the important message contained in the raw, sparing form of Mieczysław Weinberg's music will be enriched by video-art visualizations by Zuzanna Grzegorowska.

Although Wajnberg composed his last songs about 40 years ago, they have become alarmingly relevant now, when the ghosts of the almost forgotten wartime past have awakened again.

Warsaw | Hashtag Ensemble: Phantom of Peace

Hashtag 6.5.23Media patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

The programme of the Hashtag Ensemble’s concert on the 6th of May, 2023 at 4 p.m. at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews consists of four works by American composer Judd Greenstein, Ukrainian composer Victoria Poleva, Israeli composer Aviy Kopelman and Polish composer Wojciech Błażejczyk.

The theme of Angels of Peace by Wojciech Błażejczyk is the horror of the war in Donbas. The title refers to the medal, a traditional gift given at the Vatican to heads of state. In 2015, Vladimir Putin received him from the hands of the Pope. In this piece, Błażejczyk mockingly recites fragments of Putin's ‘peace’ speeches into the trumpet (‘We will always be on the side of the forces of peace with those who choose the path of equal partnership, who deny war as contrary to the very essence of life and human nature’). The piece evolves into a thrilling finale.
