We announce the results of the art & violence 2023 International Composing Competition!

artThe subject of this year's edition of the competition was to compose a piece for harpsichord and electronics with a duration of up to 10 minutes, referring in its idea to the relationship between various forms of violence and art, as well as various individual forms of its expression.

The jury members: Magdalena Długosz (Poland), Marco Stroppa (Italy), Karol Nepelski (Poland/Germany), evaluated the scores sent from: England, Brazil, Greece, Ireland, Poland, Turkey, Slovakia, and the United States.

Ultimately, the jury decided to award only the first prize to Tomasz Szczepanik from Poland for the composition intimidazione for harpsichord and computer.

Andrzej Panufnik Archive handed over to the Warsaw University Library

On the 21st of April, 2023, 118 boxes with Andrzej Panufnik's scores left the composer's house in Twickenham near London for Warsaw. By decision of Lady Camilla Panufnik and her children: Jem Panufnik and Roxanna Panufnik, their father's legacy was donated to the University Library in Warsaw. The Andrzej Panufnik Archive will henceforth be part of the Polish Composers' Archive of the BUW Music Collection Cabinet, headed by Piotr Maculewicz.

The collection that was prepared by Prof. Beata Bolesławska-Lewandowska, the author of many works about the composer, includes correspondence, articles and press clippings, Panufnik's notes and programme notes, typescripts of his interviews and radio appearances, concert programmes, documentation of birthday concerts and granting the composer the noble rank, photos from various periods of his life and other materials documenting the life, work and reception of Andrzej Panufnik's music in the world. It is a priceless collection and a great gift for Poland! After thorough study, these materials will be available to researchers from Poland and around the world.

Katowice | The winner of the 2nd International Competition of Polish Music

Carter Johnson – a pianist, winner of the 2nd International Competition of Polish Music together with the Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Yaroslav Shemet, will perform on the 28th of April, 2023 at 19.00. He will perform Piano Concerto by Edvard Grieg.

In addition to the Norwegian accent, the programme also features a Finnish element, in the form of Jean Sibelius' Symphonic Poem ‘Finlandia’, and a Polish one - one of Witold Lutosławski's most famous works, i.e. his Concerto for Orchestra.

In this work, we will find folk motifs from the collection Mazowsze by Oskar Kolberg, which are subjected to all kinds of processing and modifications. The work was commissioned by Witold Rowicki, and the source of inspiration for it can be found in Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra.

Zielona Góra | April Romance

On the 28th of April, 2023 at 19:00 we will hear the Symphony Orchestra of the Zielona Góra Philharmonic conducted by Bassem Akiki. Marcin Markowicz will play the role of both violinist soloist and composer, presenting his Violin Concerto.

Written by Marcin Markowicz in 2018, commissioned by the ‘Musical Spaces festival in Konin, the Violin Concerto will be performed in Zielona Góra for the first time.

The artists will also present the 7th Symphony in C major Op. 105 by Jean Sibelius, Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 1, Op. 40 and No. 2 op. 50 by Ludwig van Beethoven and Aminah from the oratorio Madonna by Bassem Akiki, a Polish-Lebanese composer and conductor, the first guest conductor of the Zielona Góra Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Friday's concert will be crowned with the most famous work by the French composer, Maurice Ravel, Boléro.

Szczecin | 5th Szczecin Classic Festival

Szczecin Classic Festival, the largest and most prestigious classical music festival in Western Pomerania, will take place from the 27th April to the 3rd of May, 2023, and will feature recognized musicians in concerts and music masterclasses.

Among the artists are: Berlin Philharmonic Concertmaster Daniel Stabrawa, Szymanowski Quartet ́s Agata Szymczewska and Volodia Mykytka, Tomasz Tomaszewski, concertmaster of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Emanuel Salvador, concertmaster of the Baltic Neopolis Orchestra, Andriy Viytovych leader of Valencia Opera house, Konstantin Heidrich member of the Faure Piano Quartet.

During the festival, there will be an international music course called the Szczecin Classic Academy for students and graduates of conservatoires from Poland and Europe, as well as a competition
for a chamber ensemble residency. The opening concert of the festival will feature the winner of the chamber ensemble residency competition, who will receive not only the financial prize but also the opportunity to perform a concert which will be live streamed on Polish Radio ‘Dwójka’ and on the internet.

Warsaw | Centenary of the Warsaw University Academic Choir

KoncertGalowyUW 27.4.23The high level of education is not the only reason to be proud of the University of Warsaw - the Academic Choir of the Warsaw University is one of the best and oldest choirs of this kind in Poland. On the 27th of April, 2023 at 19:00, the ensemble will celebrate its centenary with a unique Gala Concert at the Warsaw Philharmonic.

The programme will consist of a cappella compositions by Polish and foreign composers, presenting ensemble's rich repertoire. Works by W. Byrd, R. Vaughan Williams, K. Szymanowski, P. Hindemith, P. Łukaszewski, M. Bembinow and others will be performed.

The solo parts will be performed by: Marta Czarkowska (soprano), Paweł Kowalewski (tenor), Krzysztof Chalimoniuk (baritone) and Krzysztof Łazicki (bass-baritone). The ensemble will be conducted by Irina Bogdanovich.

The Amici Canentes Choir of the Society of the Friends of the University of Warsaw Choir will perform as a guest conducted by Agnieszka Zińczuk.

Free tickets to the concert can be booked via an online form and collected on the day of the concert at the Warsaw Philharmonic (18:00-18:40). The form is available on the Choir's website: www.chor.uw.edu.pl

Katowice | NOSPR Chamber Musicians

On the 27th of April, 2023 at 7.30 p.m., as part of the 'NOSPR Chamber Musicians' cycle, we will hear a piano quartet: Aleksander Daszkiewicz (violin), Maria Shetty (viola), Adam Krzeszowiec (cello), Anna Krzeszowiec (piano).

Gustav Mahler's Piano Quartet in A minor and Richard Strauss Piano Quartet in C minor will be performed.

The programme of the concert also includes Krzysztof Penderecki's String Trio - a masterpiece of contrasts, stretched, as Mieczysław Tomaszewski writes in the artist's biography, ‘between predatory wildness and sad dreaminess, almost demonic aggressiveness and oneiric stopping of the run’.

Tychy | Fryderyk Classical Music Gala 2023

On the 27th of April, 2023 at 21.00 in Tychy's Mediateka - the seat of the Chamber Orchestra of the City of Tychy - AUKSO, the Fryderyk Classical Music Gala 2023 will be held, crowning this year's edition of the Fryderyk Festival. The award ceremony will feature performances by the soloists and ensembles, including those nominated for Fryderyk awards.

One of them is AUKSO, lead by Marek Moś. In addition to AUKSO, we will also hear Alina Mleczko – a saxophonist, accompanied by the Tango Attack ansemble, as well as clarinetist Andrzej Ciepliński and award-winning pianist Tymoteusz Bies: the musicians will perform three miniatures by Krzysztof Penderecki from their joint album Irrberge, nominated for the Fryderyk Award.

Fans of opera music will surely enjoy the performance of the countertenor Michał Sławecki.

Wrocław | 2nd International Music Festival ‘Brzmienie Fest’: Teresa Kaban and Henryk Błażej

The fifth concert of the 2nd International Music Festival ‘Brzmienie Fest’ is coming. On the 23rd of April, 2023 at 6.00 p.m. in the historic Art Hotel in the heart of Wrocław, music from the Romanticism era will be performed by pianist Teresa Kaban and flautist Henryk Błażej.

We will hear piano pieces performed on a historical instrument, and chamber pieces (for flute and piano) by Polish, French and German composers: Fryderyk Chopin, Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann and Cécile Chaminade.

The festival is organized by the Culture of Sound Foundation. Iwona Sukienik is the artistic director.
